Google’s Gemini AI continues to evolve at a breakneck pace, with a suite of new features rolling out in July 2026 that push the boundaries of what multimodal AI assistants can do. From real-time video understanding to deeper integration across Google’s ecosystem, here’s everything you need to know about the latest Gemini updates.

Gemini Live Gets Video Capabilities

The standout feature in this wave of updates is Gemini Live’s new ability to process and respond to live video input. Users can now point their phone camera at an object, scene, or document and have a natural conversation with Gemini about what it sees. During a demo at Google’s Mountain View campus, the AI correctly identified a rare succulent plant, provided care instructions, and even suggested compatible companion plants — all from a live video feed.

This builds on the existing voice conversation mode but adds a visual dimension that makes Gemini far more useful for real-world tasks like cooking assistance, home repairs, and navigation in unfamiliar environments.

Deeper Workspace Integration

Google is weaving Gemini more tightly into its productivity suite. The latest update lets Gemini reason across Gmail, Drive, and Calendar simultaneously. For instance, you can ask “Find the flight confirmation from Sarah, check if it conflicts with my Thursday meetings, and draft a reply confirming I’ll be at the airport” — and Gemini handles all three steps in one go.

For enterprise users, Google is introducing Gemini Agents — lightweight AI workflows that can automate recurring business processes. Early adopters in the financial services sector report cutting report-generation time by up to 60%.

Competition Heating Up

These updates come as competition in the AI assistant space intensifies. OpenAI’s ChatGPT continues to dominate consumer mindshare, while Anthropic’s Claude has carved out a strong position in enterprise. Apple’s on-device intelligence features (covered separately) are also reshaping expectations around privacy-first AI. Google’s advantage remains its massive ecosystem — with over 2 billion Android devices and the Workspace productivity suite, no competitor can match its distribution footprint.

Industry analysts at Forrester note that “Google’s multimodal strategy is the most ambitious in the market, but execution will determine whether it translates into sustained user adoption.”

Availability

The new Gemini features are rolling out first to Pixel devices and Google One AI Premium subscribers, with broader Android availability expected by late July 2026. iOS users will receive the update through the Google app in the following weeks.
