Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, its newest AI model that the company says approaches the capabilities of its controversial Fable 5 system. The release comes just weeks after Anthropic’s tense negotiations with the US government over AI safety standards.

In a statement, Anthropic said Opus 5 “comes close to the capabilities of Claude Fable 5 in many domains” and shows significant improvement on complex coding tasks. Fable 5 is the public-facing Mythos-class model that drew government scrutiny earlier this year and was temporarily taken offline before returning with enhanced cybersecurity safeguards.

The company is positioning Opus 5 primarily for enterprise customers, describing it as the ideal everyday model for knowledge work and biology research. Fable 5 remains the recommended choice for the most ambitious projects and long-horizon AI agent work.

Notably, Anthropic has built stronger cybersecurity protections into Opus 5 compared to its predecessor, Opus 4.8. When asked whether the company consulted with the Trump administration before the public rollout, spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri told The Verge: “We continue to work with our government partners to conduct their own independent testing of our models. This includes Opus 5.”

The release signals Anthropic’s continued push to compete with OpenAI, which recently launched GPT-5.6 under a two-week government trial period. The escalating AI arms race has drawn increased regulatory attention, with both companies now navigating a more complex approval landscape than ever before.
