Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, its most capable model yet, with the company claiming performance that approaches its internal frontier model codenamed Fable 5.
The release marks a significant milestone for Anthropic, which has positioned itself as the safety-conscious alternative in the AI arms race. Opus 5 represents a major leap in reasoning, coding, and long-form task completion compared to its predecessor.
Early benchmarks suggest Opus 5 delivers substantial improvements across the board. The model handles complex multi-step reasoning tasks, extended coding sessions, and detailed analysis with fewer errors than previous versions. Users testing the model report notably better performance on tasks requiring sustained attention over long contexts.
Anthropic has been steadily releasing models under its Claude brand, with the Opus line representing its top-tier offering. Each generation has narrowed the gap with competitors like OpenAI’s GPT series and Google’s Gemini models.
The company’s approach differs from some competitors by emphasizing what it calls “constitutional AI” — training models to follow explicit principles rather than relying solely on human feedback. Opus 5 extends this methodology with improved alignment techniques.
Availability details are still emerging, but Anthropic typically rolls out new models to API customers and Claude subscribers in phases. Enterprise customers with existing Anthropic contracts are expected to get priority access.
The launch intensifies competition in the frontier AI space, where OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic are all releasing increasingly capable models on overlapping schedules. For developers and businesses, the rapid iteration means more options — and more decisions about which model family to build on.
