Hassabis Steps Back as DeepMind CEO in Google AI Shake-Up

Demis Hassabis spent the better part of two decades turning DeepMind from a scrappy London research outfit into the lab behind Google’s Gemini models, a Nobel Prize, and some of the most cited research in artificial intelligence. On August 5, he handed over the keys.

Google confirmed that Hassabis is stepping down as chief executive of Google DeepMind. He is not leaving the company. He becomes chairman of the unit and takes a new post as Alphabet’s chief scientist, while day-to-day command passes to Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s long-serving chief technology officer. Kavukcuoglu takes the title of senior vice president of Google DeepMind and reports directly to Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai.

A step up, not a step out

Hassabis framed the change as a chance to focus on the goal he has chased since before DeepMind existed. “I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand,” he wrote in the blog post announcing the move. The new arrangement frees him from running a division of thousands of people so he can concentrate on long-range research direction across Alphabet. He also keeps his second job: Hassabis continues to lead Isomorphic Labs, the Alphabet drug-discovery company that grew out of DeepMind’s protein-folding work.

The choreography matters. When founders step back from major AI labs, the rumour mill usually assumes boardroom drama. Google clearly wanted this one to read as succession rather than upheaval, and promoting the most senior technical insider available is about as continuity-flavoured as these announcements get.

The most internal hire available

Kavukcuoglu is a 13-year veteran of DeepMind who has spent recent years as its chief technology officer. His new remit covers Gemini model development, frontier research, and the teams behind the Gemini app and developer products. That last detail is the interesting one. DeepMind began life as a research lab that fiercely guarded its independence from Google’s product machine. The new structure puts research and product under a single operational leader, which says a great deal about what Alphabet now wants from the lab: models that ship.

Reporting lines tell the same story. Kavukcuoglu answers directly to Pichai, not to Hassabis. Whatever the chairman title implies, the person running Gemini day to day now sits one step from the very top of Alphabet.

Jeff Dean walks out the door

The reshuffle arrived with a second surprise attached. Jeff Dean, Alphabet’s chief scientist and one of the most influential engineers in Google’s history, is leaving to found a startup called Discovery Loop. The company will build AI models designed to improve themselves with little or no human involvement. Google is investing an unspecified sum in Discovery Loop and will serve as its cloud provider, an arrangement that keeps Dean close without keeping him on the payroll.

Dean joined Google in 1999 and helped design much of the infrastructure that made the company’s scale possible, from MapReduce to TensorFlow. His exit ends one of the longest and most productive engineering tenures in Silicon Valley, and the chief scientist role he vacates now passes to Hassabis.

What to watch next

The timing invites reading. The frontier model race has never been more crowded, with OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta all shipping aggressively this year, and Google reorganising its most important asset in the middle of that contest is not a casual act. Pichai is betting that the technologist who built the machinery will run it better than the founder who dreamed it up.

Two questions hang over the new structure. The first is whether Hassabis’s chief scientist post carries real authority across Alphabet’s sprawling research estate or settles into something closer to an honorific. The second is what Discovery Loop actually builds. Self-improving models are among the most ambitious and most debated ideas in the field, and Dean is one of very few people with the track record to make investors take the premise seriously on day one.

For DeepMind itself, expect continuity before revolution. Kavukcuoglu helped shape the current Gemini roadmap and inherits teams he already ran as CTO. The difference is accountability: research, product and the developer platform now answer to one person, and that person answers to Pichai.
