The Bürgerbüro (citizens’ service office) in Leipzig’s Gohlis-Center shopping centre has temporarily closed to visitors because of damage to the building. According to a notice published by the Leipziger Internet Zeitung, staff are still handling residents’ requests from other locations, and documents already applied for can be collected elsewhere.

What happened

The notice, published in the Leipziger Internet Zeitung’s “Wortmelder” section, says the closure is a precaution to protect the public. The section carries statements sent in by third parties, and the newspaper does not edit or verify them. The notice says the building’s owner has already ordered work to repair the damage and restore full access.

A Bürgerbüro is a local office of the city administration where residents handle everyday matters in person. The Gohlis-Center branch is one of several in Leipzig. All employees from the closed office are continuing their work at other sites.

The closure also affects the ASD, short for Allgemeiner Sozialdienst (the general social services team that is part of youth and family welfare), which is also based in the Gohlis-Center. The notice says the ASD cannot currently be visited on site either.

What it means for you

If you planned to visit the Gohlis-Center Bürgerbüro, you will need to go elsewhere or use an online service. The notice gives the following guidance:

  • Collecting documents: Documents you have already applied for can be picked up at the Bürgerbüro Leutzsch, the citizens’ office in the Leutzsch district, during its normal opening hours.
  • Online services: According to the notice, many matters can be handled online, so a personal visit is often not necessary. It is worth checking whether your request can be done from home before you travel.
  • Other offices: Residents who cannot complete their request online are asked to use the other Bürgerbüros across the city.
  • Waiting times: The city publishes current visitor numbers at its online waiting-time display, www.leipzig.de/wartezeiten-buergerbueros. Checking it before you go can help you pick a less busy office.

The notice says the move to working across several sites, including mobile working, is meant to keep requests moving and to keep appointments available.

If you are in contact with the ASD, staff can still be reached by email and phone as usual. Individual appointments that cannot be postponed, such as those related to child protection or Hilfeplan meetings (planning meetings for family support measures), will still take place. The notice says the arrangements for these are agreed case by case, so contact your caseworker directly to confirm where and how your meeting will happen.

What to watch next

The repairs have been ordered by the building’s owner, and the closure is described as temporary. Before visiting the Gohlis-Center, check the city’s website at leipzig.de for confirmation that the Bürgerbüro has reopened. Until then, use Leutzsch for collecting documents that are ready, and another Bürgerbüro or the online services for anything else.

The Leipziger Internet Zeitung also links this report to its wider coverage of Leipzig’s citizens’ offices. That coverage includes staff shortages, closures planned as part of the city’s savings, and a training Bürgerbüro moving to Gohlis. If you rely on a particular branch, keep an eye on city announcements about changes to the network.
