If you’ve moved to Rotterdam from abroad and want a day out that shows your children, visiting family or yourself how the city fits together, this guide is for you. It covers going up the Euromast and taking a Spido boat tour from the foot of the Erasmus Bridge, with what works for children, what suits adults, and how to book sensibly.

Planning the day

The Euromast is at Parkhaven 20, 3016 GM Rotterdam. Its website says it is open daily from 09:30 to 22:00. Royal Spido sails all year round from the foot of the Erasmus Bridge. Departure times aren’t on its homepage, so check the current sailing schedule on the Spido site before you leave the house.

It helps to think about the order. If you go up the tower first, children get a map in their heads: they spot the bridges, cranes and ships from above, then see them up close from the boat. If your children are at their best in the morning, do the cruise first and finish with cake at the top.

If you’re planning a winter visit, check one thing first. The Euromast blog has announced a renovation and says the tower will close after Christmas. The homepage gives no reopening details, so look at the Euromast site before you book for the colder months.

Up the Euromast with children

A ticket to the top includes The Rise of Rotterdam, an interactive journey through the city’s story from port city to global city. The Euromast says it is free with every ticket to the top. It gives children, and newcomers of any age, some background before they look out over the river.

For most families the best part is the Euroscoop, which rises to 185 metres. You get 360-degree views, stories about Rotterdam, a colourful light and sound show and music by DJ Oliver Heldens. The newest feature is a glass floor that turns clear so you can look straight down. If that’s too much for a nervous child or parent, you can make the floor opaque again at the touch of a button.

The homepage currently promotes an autumn break programme with a scavenger hunt, mini boats children can steer, and face painting. These programmes change with the season, so check what’s on before your visit.

When legs get tired, Brasserie Euromast has a kids’ menu, cake and Dutch children’s favourites such as Fristi and Chocomel. On the way out you pass the Coffeecorner and gift shop on the first floor, open every day from 9:30 to 21:00. It sells Rotterdam souvenirs and treats such as Maasstroompjes, so agree a budget with the children before you reach the till.

On the water with Spido

Spido calls itself a household name in Rotterdam for over 100 years. Its boats sail among the busy ocean-going and inland traffic of Europe’s largest port. For a first trip, the obvious choice is the new Rotterdam Highlights and Harbour Tour. It lasts 75 minutes, covers the city and the port, includes an audio guide and has catering on board. Most children can manage that length, especially with a drink and a snack.

For younger children, look at the Spido Family Brunch, where a magician and a balloon artist join you on board while you eat. It works well for a birthday or a weekend when grandparents are visiting. Older children and adults who want to know how the port works may prefer the Daytrip Tweede Maasvlakte, which is about the port’s innovations and its future.

Tickets and combination deals

Spido lists the Rotterdam Highlights and Harbour Tour at €18.75 for adults and €10.55 for children. The homepage doesn’t say which ages count as a child, so check the ticket details when you book.

If you’re doing both attractions, look at a combination ticket. Spido sells Spido and Euromast at €38.75 for adults and €27.05 for children. The Euromast sells its own Euromast and Spido combination, so compare what each includes and what it costs on the day before you pay.

Other combinations can stretch the day into a weekend:

  • Spido and Remastered: adults €40.25, children €23.40
  • Spido and The Depot: adults €33.00
  • Spido and Feyenoord Stadium Tour: adults €33.00, children €22.00
  • Euromast and Splashtours, and Euromast and ss Rotterdam: prices on the Euromast site

If you like an early start, the Euromast’s Goodmorning Rotterdam ticket is only available between 09:30 and 11:30, and its current price is on the Euromast site. Spido also sells a gift card, which makes a practical present for relatives coming to stay.

Ideas for adults and special occasions

You can abseil from 100 metres high on the Euromast. The homepage gives no age limit or conditions, so read the booking page before you promise it to a teenager. For a night away without leaving the city, you can stay in the Rotterdam Suites, with breakfast included, and the rates are on the Euromast site. The brasserie serves international food and has set arrangements, which suit a date night or a team outing. Spido also organises sailing events for work or celebrations.

FAQ

Is the Euromast suitable for young children?

Yes. The Euromast presents itself as an outing for the whole family. There’s a kids’ menu in the brasserie and seasonal activities such as a scavenger hunt and face painting. The Euroscoop’s glass floor can be made opaque again with a button if it feels too thrilling.

How long is the Spido harbour tour?

The Rotterdam Highlights and Harbour Tour lasts 75 minutes and covers the city and the port. An audio guide is included and there’s catering on board. Departure times are on the sailing schedule on the Spido site.

Is there a combination ticket for both?

Yes. Spido sells Spido and Euromast at €38.75 for adults and €27.05 for children. The Euromast sells its own version too, so compare both sites before you book.

Is the Euromast open all year?

It says it is open daily from 09:30 to 22:00, but its blog announces a renovation and a closure after Christmas. Check the Euromast site for current opening and reopening details before you plan a winter visit.
