Frankfurt’s U-Bahn lines U4 and U5 will run reduced or no services on several nights in late October and early November while the Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF) tests a new digital train control system. The Frankfurter Rundschau reports that replacement buses, longer trains and more frequent trams will cover the gaps, but journeys home may take longer.
What happened
According to the Frankfurter Rundschau, the Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF), the city’s transport operator for the U-Bahn and trams, is testing a new digital signalling and train protection system called “Digital Train Control Frankfurt” (DTC). The test runs need empty track, so lines U4 and U5 will make way at night. The newspaper says the information came from the Stadt Frankfurt (the City of Frankfurt).
The test runs take place in the nights from Sunday 25 October to Thursday 29 October, and from Monday 2 November to Thursday 5 November. On each of these nights, the changes apply from about 22 Uhr until about 3.30 Uhr the following day (“Uhr” means o’clock, and German timetables use the 24-hour clock).
During those hours the U4 does not run at all. The U5 runs only between Preungesheim and Hauptfriedhof (the main cemetery stop).
What it means for you
If you travel on the U4 or U5 in the evening or late at night, plan for a different route on the affected dates. The Frankfurter Rundschau lists these alternatives, which the VGF is strengthening for the test period:
- U6: runs with longer trains, according to the city.
- U7: runs every 15 minutes.
- Tram line 12: runs every 15 minutes between Hauptbahnhof/Münchener Straße and Hugo-Junkers-Straße. It serves stops including Römer/Paulskirche, the old town hall square, as well as the Nordend and Bornheim districts.
- Tram line 16: runs every 15 minutes between Hauptbahnhof (the main railway station) and Ginnheim Mitte. It replaces the U4 section between Hauptbahnhof and Bockenheimer Warte.
- S-Bahn: the S-Bahn suburban trains offer an alternative between Hauptbahnhof and Konstablerwache.
For U5 passengers, the VGF is running a Schienenersatzverkehr (SEV), a rail replacement bus service. The buses run between Konstablerwache and Marbachweg/Sozialzentrum and go via Hauptfriedhof, which links up with the part of the U5 still in operation.
In practice, this means:
- If you live along the U4, for example around Bockenheim or Ginnheim, tram 16 is the main replacement between the city centre and Ginnheim Mitte.
- If you use the inner-city section between Hauptbahnhof and Konstablerwache, the S-Bahn is the quickest option the city mentions.
- If you travel on the northern part of the U5, take the replacement bus from Konstablerwache to Hauptfriedhof, then continue on the U5 towards Preungesheim, or stay on the bus to Marbachweg/Sozialzentrum.
The VGF and traffiQ, the city-owned company that plans Frankfurt’s local public transport, ask passengers to allow extra travel time. The source does not mention any change to fares or tickets.
Before you set off, check current timetables and connections in the RMVgo app or at rmv-frankfurt.de. RMV stands for Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund, the regional transport network that covers Frankfurt.
What to watch next
The first round of testing starts on the night of Sunday 25 October, and the second runs from Monday 2 November to Thursday 5 November. If you regularly travel late on the U4 or U5, check the RMVgo app or rmv-frankfurt.de before each of these nights, as live timetables will show the replacement services. The Frankfurter Rundschau does not say when the DTC system will go into regular service or whether more test nights will follow.
