The clocks went back overnight, so today has an extra hour. The rest of today’s news covers road closures around Munich and Leipzig, Frankfurt’s childcare ranking, a protest at Leipzig/Halle airport and an anniversary that shaped modern Germany.

Clocks go back as winter time begins

Germany switched to winter time overnight, which makes Sunday 25 October a 25-hour day and gives everyone an extra hour in bed. Mornings will be light earlier again, but the sun will also set earlier in the afternoon. If you have a device that does not update itself, such as an oven or car clock, set it back one hour.

If you use this junction regularly, do not rely on habit.

Frankfurt ranks first for daycare places

Frankfurt has come top for its Kita (daycare centre) provision in an index that measures how child-friendly German cities are. The city scored less well in other categories. For parents moving to Frankfurt, this is encouraging news on one of the hardest parts of settling in with young children.

Why German school days start so early

In The Local’s Inside Germany column, journalist Tom Pugh argues that German schools start far too early. He looks at the history behind the start-early, finish-early timetable used in kindergartens and primary schools across the country, which many international parents have to build their working day around.

65 years since the German-Turkish labour agreement

When Germany and Turkey signed the Anwerbeabkommen (labour recruitment agreement) in 1961, nobody expected that hundreds of thousands of people would make Germany their permanent home. For many families, that new life was a success they worked hard for. The anniversary is a reminder of how long Germany has been a country of immigration.
