The two venues at a glance
When the Manchester drizzle settles in for the day, two of the easiest indoor options sit side by side at Trafford Palazzo. Both venues describe each other as “right next door”, so you can do one in the morning, have lunch, and do the other in the afternoon without going back out into the rain.
LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester calls itself an indoor LEGO playground, and that is a fair description. Inside you will find MINILAND, an interactive model city that shifts from day to night as airships swoop and towers light up. There is also the LEGO Ninjago City Adventure play feature, the Kingdom Quest chariot ride, and a DUPLO farm for the smallest builders.
SEA LIFE Manchester is an aquarium with over 2,000 creatures, from native shores to tropical seas. Zones include the Rocky Hideout, Shark Shipwreck, Stingray Bay and the Ocean Tunnel, where you walk through with the water around you. The Turtle Beach show explains the turtle life cycle, which tends to hold children’s attention better than reading the signs.
Which one suits your children
Neither official page sets a recommended age range, so judge by what is inside. For toddlers and pre-schoolers, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre has the DUPLO farm, which uses the larger bricks made for little hands. The centre also offers Adult and Pre-Schooler tickets for weekday visits during term-time, which include the full attraction plus Little Play Times learning activities. If you have a pre-schooler at home and older children at school, this is the quieter way to visit.
School-age children who like building, rides and role play will probably get the most from the Ninjago area, Kingdom Quest and MINILAND. The LEGOLAND Discovery Package adds a virtual reality LEGO race experience and a LEGO souvenir to a play session, which may appeal more to older children than to toddlers.
SEA LIFE works across a wide age range because it is mostly walking and looking. Babies in carriers or buggies can enjoy the colours and movement, and older children can follow the shark and turtle stories. SEA LIFE also lists a Virtual Reality Experience and paid animal experiences, so check what is included in your ticket before promising anything to the children.
Both venues say under 2s go free. Read the conditions on each booking page, because the LEGOLAND page marks this offer with an asterisk.
Ticket tips before you book
The most useful money-saving tip from both sites is simple: book online in advance. SEA LIFE says standard tickets start from £16 when booked online in advance. LEGOLAND Discovery Centre also says booking online in advance saves money, but its page does not give a standard ticket price, so check the venue’s own site for current prices.
If you plan to visit both, look at the combined ticket. LEGOLAND’s page says you can save up to 38% online on the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre plus SEA LIFE ticket, and elsewhere both pages mention saving up to 33% and prices from £15 per person, per attraction. The headline prices also differ: LEGOLAND’s page says “Visit 2 attractions from £30”, and SEA LIFE’s says “Visit 2 attractions from £39”. Compare the options on the day you book rather than relying on either figure.
The combined tickets are flexible. They are valid for 90 days from the date you visit the first attraction, so you do not have to do both on the same rainy Saturday. Both venues also offer a booking guarantee with free rescheduling before your arrival time. The exact cut-off and conditions are on each booking page, so read them before you pay.
If you think you will go often, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre sells an Annual Pass for 12 months of unlimited play, from £30 per person. SEA LIFE promotes the Merlin Annual Pass, which covers a year of visits to several attractions. For newcomers who expect a long, wet first winter, a pass may be worth costing up.
Options for adults
This is where many newcomers get caught out. LEGOLAND Discovery Centre states clearly that adults must be accompanied by a child to enter. If you are a couple, or a group of friends, you cannot just walk in on a normal day. The exception is Adult Night, which runs on various dates in 2026 from 6.30pm to 9pm. The page lists these as events, so check the dates before planning around one.
SEA LIFE has no such rule on its page, so adults without children can visit an ordinary session. It also runs After Hours with the Mermaids on selected dates from 5pm to 9pm, with last entry at 8pm. The animal experiences are another option for adults: one reviewer quoted on the SEA LIFE page says they have completed all three and recommends them.
Planning a rainy day out
Both centres are cashless, so bring a card or phone payment. If you are still waiting for a UK bank card, make sure whatever you use works for contactless payments here.
Visiting this autumn? SEA LIFE’s Halloween season, Ascarium: Tricks & Treats, runs from 26 September until 8 November. A separate event, Ascarium: The Cursed Depths, runs on 30 and 31 October, and 1 November 2026. If your children scare easily, check the event details on the SEA LIFE site before you go.
Because the combined ticket lasts 90 days, a sensible plan for families with toddlers is to do one venue per visit. Small children often tire after one attraction, and splitting them up gives you two rainy-day plans instead of one long day.
Opening hours are not listed on the main pages, and they can change with school holidays and events. Check each venue’s own site before you set off.
