What the Nederlands Film Festival is
For 46 years the Nederlands Film Festival (NFF) has been the place in Utrecht where the full range of Dutch film is shown and celebrated. The programme covers new feature films, series and documentaries, short films, school screenings, digital culture and talks. The 2026 edition was the 46th. It ran from Friday 25 September to Friday 2 October and ended with the Gouden Kalveren, the Golden Calf awards. The festival has handed them out every year since its first edition in 1981.
A few parts of the programme are worth knowing by name. Premières bring new Dutch titles to the red carpet, and in 2026 the opening film was Downtown by Michiel van Erp. Focus adds conversations after screenings, interviews and the Focustalks, where makers talk about the stories, inspiration and ideas behind their work. Storyspace, in Bibliotheek Neude, is an exhibition of interactive installations, VR experiences, apps and performances. The NFF Debuutcompetitie shows debut productions by promising new makers, and the Studentencompetitie shows graduation work from Dutch film and art academies. Through NFFx030 the festival also goes out into Utrecht’s neighbourhoods with films, immersive installations and open-air screenings.
Most of the programme is aimed at adults. For children, the festival’s pages mention school screenings and an education programme that helps pupils look more critically at images. Both are organised through schools. The pages do not describe a family programme or give age limits, so if you want to bring children, ask the festival through the chat on its website.
Dates, venues and getting there
The Plan je bezoek page lists the main festival locations as Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, Bibliotheek Neude, Kinepolis Jaarbeurs Utrecht and De Sien. In 2026 the Stadsschouwburg became the festival heart from 26 to 30 September. Its café, Mevr. Dudok, was where makers, visitors and passers-by came together.
The festival gives these walking times from Utrecht Centraal:
- Kinepolis Jaarbeurs Utrecht: 5 to 10 minutes
- Bibliotheek Neude: 10 minutes
- Stadsschouwburg Utrecht: 15 to 20 minutes
Buses also run from the station to the venues, and you can plan your journey on 9292.nl or NS.nl. If you cycle, the station has the largest bicycle parking in the world, where you can also rent an OV-fiets. If you come by car, the festival suggests parking at a P+R on the edge of the city and taking public transport for the last part.
The festival is wheelchair-friendly, has sign language interpreters at Q&As and offers audio description.
How tickets work
The festival’s FAQ page explains how ticketing works. You buy tickets online at filmfestival.nl/programma, with or without logging in, and pay with iDEAL or credit card. During the festival you can also buy them at the NFF service desks in Bibliotheek Neude, Kinepolis Jaarbeurs and Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. You can buy a ticket on site until the event starts.
A free Mijn NFF account is worth setting up. It stores your e-tickets and order history and lets you mark favourites. You also have to be logged in to use a pass or the VriendenLoterij VIP-Kaart discount. Your confirmation arrives by email within a few minutes. Show the e-ticket on your phone or tablet, or add it to Google Wallet or Apple Wallet. Pass holders do not get an e-ticket, because the QR code on the pass is scanned at the door.
- Sold out: join the waiting list. When tickets become available, the people at the top of the list get a message first.
- Last-minute seats: report to the desk at the venue 15 minutes before the screening starts. If seats are still empty at the start, people who reported can buy a ticket in the order they arrived. This is not guaranteed.
- Refunds: in principle, tickets cannot be refunded. Contact the festival through the chat to see what is possible in your case.
- Prices: regular tickets, reduced tickets and special events each have their own prices. The festival’s ticket info page has the full and current list.
Discounts and passes
If you are under 30 or over 65, you pay a reduced price for regular screenings and events and show ID at the venue. The under-30 discount does not apply to the Volkskrantdag or NFFx030. Utrecht residents with a U-pas pay €1 per film ticket and can pay it from their U-pas balance. Bring the card with you, because it is checked at the door.
Cineville members watch for free at the venues listed on the FAQ page. Book your Cineville ticket on the festival website. From an hour before the screening, collect a valid e-ticket with a QR code at the NFF desk. You can only book a Cineville ticket for yourself. A VriendenLoterij VIP-Kaart gives you 2 free regular film tickets, with €2 service costs per ticket. In 2026 these discount passes could be used from 27 August.
In 2026 the Dagpas cost €29 and was valid from Saturday 26 to Wednesday 30 September. It gave free entry to everything at Kinepolis and Bibliotheek Neude and to the film programme in the Blauwe Zaal at the Stadsschouwburg. It is worth buying if you plan to see three or more films or events in one day. Red carpet premières carry an extra charge, and the pass does not cover the Focustalks, Talentdag, Volkskrantdag or NFFx030. Each Mijn NFF account can order one Dagpas. If a friend without a Dagpas is joining you, add a regular ticket for them to the same order.
Screenings for non-Dutch speakers
For most internationals this is the key question. The festival shows films with Dutch or English subtitles, and the programme overview lets you filter for them. Set that filter before you start choosing.
The pages do not say which talks or Q&As are in English, so expect them to be in Dutch unless the programme says otherwise. Storyspace’s installations and VR experiences focus on looking, feeling and experiencing, which may make them an easier place to start. Still, check each listing first.
If you cannot get to a venue, the Online Filmzaal opened on 25 September with a themed programme, films and premières. The opening and closing films were also shown in cinemas around the country. Online prices are on the FAQ page.
