Google Turns Off Search Entirely in Schools That Reject Its AI

Google will switch off Search entirely for K-12 students in schools that reject its AI features. The company confirmed the policy to The New York Times and repeated it in an education update published on Tuesday.

Access to Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search “will be entirely off” for student accounts unless “administrators explicitly turn them on.” That single sentence removes the compromise position schools were asking for.

No middle setting exists

Administrators cannot keep plain search and switch the Gemini layer off. Chris Phillips, Google’s vice president of education, told the NYT that “Search and AI are deeply integrated.” He added that schools disabling Google’s AI features “will not have access to Search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available.”

Google did not answer The Verge‘s request for comment on the decision. The company has framed the change as giving administrators explicit control rather than quietly enabling tools on their behalf.

How schools got here

Months ago, Google turned its Gemini assistant on by default inside the Classroom app. That app reaches more than 150 million teachers and students worldwide. The default setting drew criticism as test scores declined and researchers questioned the effect on how students learn.

Lawmakers pressed Google last month over the “potential harms” of placing AI products in classrooms. Parents and local officials asked for a simple switch that would keep search working while turning the assistant off. Tuesday’s announcement answers that request with a harder line: opt out of the AI, lose the search box too.

The cost of opting out

For a school without a second search provider, losing Google Search is not a small inconvenience. Teachers use it for lesson planning, and students use it for research assignments every week. Districts that reject the AI package now need to buy or build an alternative before the term starts.

Several lawmakers and local leaders have already objected publicly to the bundling. The practical question is whether any of them can force Google to separate two products it now describes as one.
