The login that unlocks Dutch healthcare

Move to the Netherlands and you learn one thing fast: almost nothing happens without DigiD. It is the national digital identity that logs you into your municipality, your tax file, and increasingly your doctor. For expats, getting it running is the real first appointment. You apply online after registering with your local gemeente, receive an activation code by post, and from there DigiD becomes the key to booking a huisarts, reading test results, and viewing your medical file through patient portals.

Why does this matter for anyone watching health tech? Because the Dutch system was built to be navigated from a phone, and the tools around DigiD are where that shows.

The apps that stand in for a waiting room

Start with Thuisarts, the public information platform run by the Dutch college of general practitioners. Its app and site explain conditions in plain language and, crucially, signal when something is worth a call and when it can wait. It is a triage-by-reading tool, not a diagnosis, and it is deliberately built that way.

Then there is the video-consult. Many huisarts practices now offer a beeldbellen option, letting you speak to a GP through a secure app rather than sitting in a practice room. For a newcomer without a car or fluent Dutch, that changes the calculus of a minor worry. The gatekeeper model still applies. Your huisarts remains the door to specialists, and the app does not remove that door, it just moves it onto your screen.

AI symptom-checkers sit at the edge of this world. Systems in the mould of Google’s medical models promise smarter triage, sorting the urgent from the ordinary before a human is involved. In Dutch primary care they remain a supplement, feeding into a GP-led process rather than replacing it.

The bill you cannot app your way out of

Software cannot fix the paperwork. Every adult resident must hold basic health insurance, the zorgverzekering, and comparison sites such as Independer let you weigh policies before you sign. Behind every policy sits the eigen risico, the compulsory deductible, set at 385 euros for 2026 according to Rijksoverheid, the amount you pay yourself before most non-GP care is covered.

The interesting question is how far AI triage moves into that GP-led model without loosening the gatekeeper grip that defines Dutch care. Watch the huisarts video apps. That is where the next shift arrives first.
