Eating your way round the Markthal

Most newcomers see the Markthal first from the outside, because the huge arched building near Blaak is hard to miss. Inside, it works as a food hall more than a traditional market. According to the official Markthal website, there are more than 100 food spots under one roof, and the site lets you browse them by style: Asian, Caribbean, Dutch, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern.

That mix suits an international household well. If you miss the food from home, there is a fair chance something close to it is here, and if you want to try Dutch snacks without committing to a full restaurant meal, you can do that too. A good approach for a first visit is to walk one full loop before buying anything, then pick two or three small things from different counters and share them.

The Markthal works for adults and children alike, since you can graze at your own pace and nobody minds if a toddler wanders between stalls. The website does not list opening hours or prices on its main page, so check the venue’s own site for current times before you go, especially on Sundays and public holidays.

Markthal dates this autumn

The Markthal runs food events through the year, and it pays to sign up for its newsletter if you want to hear about them early. Two dates are listed right now. Popronde 2026 is on the programme for 7 November. Then on 21 November, Sinterklaas is coming to the Markthal.

If you have children and this is your first Dutch autumn, the Sinterklaas visit is worth putting in the calendar. Sinterklaas is a big part of childhood here, and seeing him in a busy, familiar place is an easy way in for families still learning the traditions. The event page on the Markthal site has the details on timing.

Terraces and bars at the Oude Haven

A few minutes’ walk from the Markthal is the Oude Haven, the old harbour. The Oude Haven website (in Dutch) calls it Rotterdam’s most popular going-out area in summer, with restaurants, bars and terraces looking out over the water. The first jetty here is thought to date from around 1350, which makes it the oldest harbour in the city.

The area has more than 20 bars and restaurants, including one restaurant with a Michelin star and a cocktail bar that has won awards. On a warm evening the terraces are packed until late, so this is where you go for a long drink by the water rather than a quick bite. The site also mentions De Tuin, a pop-up bar it suggests for a date, an evening with a friend, or simply going alone, and Restaurant Old Bay Rotterdam for a meal with family and friends.

Getting there is simple. Station Blaak, served by metro, trains and trams, is about three minutes’ walk away. Water taxi stop 43 is about five minutes on foot. If you drive, the Oude Haven car park is a two-minute walk, and the site says parking in and around the Oude Haven is free after 23:00.

During the day the area is calmer and easier with children. The Witte Huis, which the site describes as Europe’s first skyscraper, stands right by the harbour. Close by are Piet Blom’s cube houses, which have been an architectural curiosity for more than 30 years, and the Mariniersmuseum on the Wijnhaven, with views over the Maas and the Willemsbrug. The museum building is where marines defended the north bank near the Maas bridges during the German attack in May 1940, a useful piece of history for anyone trying to understand why central Rotterdam looks the way it does.

Clubs, house rules and getting home

Later in the evening, the area around the Oude Haven turns into a club and bar district. The Oude Haven site lists Huiskantine and Munch as nightclubs, Vrienden Live as a bar and club, Noah as a bar and club, and Pardoen as a bar and café.

One thing that catches newcomers out: each club sets its own house rules. If you want to be sure you will get in, the Oude Haven site advises checking the event page of the venue in question. That is the place to look for any age limits, dress codes or ticket requirements, because the area site itself does not list them. This part of the evening is for adults.

For the journey home, the site notes that taxis often wait outside De Vrienden Live. You can also find a taxi late at night at Station Blaak, behind Huiskantine, or catch a metro or train from there. If you plan to stay over, the site points to citizenM Rotterdam and the Stayokay hostel inside the cube houses, which can be handy when friends visit from abroad.

The summer carnival and the Straatparade

Rotterdam’s Zomercarnaval is organised by Rotterdam Unlimited, and its best-known event is the Straatparade. According to the official Zomercarnaval website (in Dutch), the parade happens every year on the last Saturday of July in the heart of the city. Music trucks, dance groups, carnival groups, floats and live music move through the centre, with a strong Caribbean feel and influences from cultures around the world.

The 2026 parade took place on 26 July, and the winners of Zomercarnaval 2026 were announced on 21 September. For next year, mark the last Saturday of July and check the site closer to the time for the route and programme, which the homepage does not give in advance.

For adults, the parade is a full day out, and it pairs naturally with an evening on an Oude Haven terrace afterwards. Families also go to watch, but the site does not give advice for children, so plan your spot, your breaks and your meeting point if you bring them along.
