Four big cities demand government money for homeless care
The mayors of Rotterdam, Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht are sounding the alarm over the rising number of homeless people, saying the total is growing dramatically fast. They point in particular to people with psychiatric problems and addiction, who increasingly cause nuisance in public space, and they are asking the cabinet for far more money for shelter and care. It is a signal that pressure on housing and social services in the big cities is still building.

In Amsterdam, the lawyer representing victims in the Chris Jude case says she saw a man masturbating in the bushes at almost the same location. Despite the promises made, she says, nothing there has changed.

A year on, a town centre cycling ban is winning people over
In Sassenheim, the number of fines handed out for breaking the town centre cycling ban has dropped sharply. In the first two weeks of September 2025 there were 55 fines; a year later only two more had been added, bringing the total to 57. Residents are positive, saying you can walk around without constantly wondering whether someone is coming up behind you, which matters if you are out with children.
