Today’s digest covers a workplace death in Cheshire, a motorway closure near Birmingham and a Home Office raid on an alleged asylum fraud gang. There is also new research from the London School of Economics on climate attitudes, and a second-hand option from Ikea.

Smart glasses help some users but face bans at venues

Some venues have banned smart glasses, and visually impaired people who rely on them fear a wider backlash. Disabled wearers say the devices make a real difference to how they get through daily life. If you use assistive technology, check a venue’s policy before you visit, because some places now restrict these devices.

If you are going through the immigration system, be wary of anyone who offers to sell you paperwork for a claim.

Faith in technology linked to less climate action

A study from the London School of Economics found that scientists who believe technology will largely solve the climate crisis are 23% less likely to sign petitions or join protests than peers who doubt it. They are also 18% less likely to make high-impact lifestyle changes, such as flying less or switching to a vegan or vegetarian diet. The report suggests this “techno-optimism” may lead people to rely on unproven solutions instead of the wider changes society needs.
