This guide is for adults who have moved to Manchester from abroad and want to give some of their time to the city, whether you came on your own or with children. You will learn how to use Manchester Community Central to find a role, what volunteering at Manchester Museum involves, and how to time your application so you are ready when the museum next recruits.

Why volunteering helps when you are new

The first months in a new country can be oddly lonely. You have a flat, a bank account and a commute, but nobody to say hello to on a Tuesday. Volunteering helps with that faster than most things. You turn up regularly, work alongside the same people and always have something to talk about.

It can also give you a local reference, a feel for how British organisations work, and a chance to practise your English or use your other languages with people who are glad you came. Manchester Museum’s own page lists the benefits: learning about the collections and world cultures, gaining new skills, making friends from around the world, and getting access to exclusive events and training. If you are in the UK on a visa, check your conditions before you commit to anything regular.

Starting with Manchester Community Central

Manchester Community Central, usually shortened to Macc, supports the city’s voluntary and community sector. Its Volunteer Centre Manchester page is the best place to start, because volunteering, support for groups and its Get involved section all sit in one place. Current roles and how to apply are listed on Macc’s own site, so check there rather than relying on what someone else has told you.

Three parts of the site are worth knowing about as a newcomer:

  • Trusteeship and governance. If you sat on boards or ran teams back home, becoming a charity trustee is another way to volunteer. Macc has trustee and governance pages with training, events and advice, and charities register their trustee and board vacancies there.
  • The Spirit of Manchester Fund. This fund helps people in the city who need support, from vulnerable and older people to local foodbanks and mental health support groups. It shows you the causes local groups work on, which helps when you are choosing where to offer your time.
  • News, events, training and jobs. Recent items have included a free marketing bootcamp, co-design workshops for social enterprises on 27 November and 1 December, and a session on AI and marketing skills for charities. They are a good way to build skills and meet people who already work in the sector.

What volunteers do at Manchester Museum

Manchester Museum describes itself as a volunteer-involving organisation. Its volunteering page lists these kinds of role:

  • Object handling: helping visitors look at real objects up close and sharing the stories behind them.
  • Welcome volunteers: greeting visitors from around the world, giving information and helping people find their way round.
  • Engagement programme support: helping with events, workshops and activities for visitors of all ages.
  • Hands-on experience: roles that feed into core museum work, such as environmental action and social justice.
  • Behind-the-scenes support: a small team helps staff with labelling, cataloguing and collections projects.

The volunteer stories on the page show the range. Damian works on the Fossils Gallery handling table, where visitors can see objects that would otherwise not be on display. Ishita, a master’s student, makes object handling interactive in the South Asia Gallery. Ann has been a Welcome volunteer for nearly three years.

The welcome role suits newcomers well. You have just arrived from abroad yourself, so you know how it feels to walk into a big building and not know where anything is. The museum says it welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds and offers flexible commitment.

How the museum recruits, and when

This part catches people out. The museum does not take volunteers all year round. It recruits at different times and posts updates on its website.

The page says the museum has recently finished a student volunteer recruitment round. Next it plans to recruit a small number of volunteers, with a particular focus on working with community partners to reach new audiences. It expects to share details of that round in early 2027.

Once recruitment opens, the process works like this:

  1. You register your interest.
  2. The museum contacts you with dates for open sessions at the museum.
  3. At the session you learn about the roles, meet the team and talk through your application. Then you both decide whether the role suits you.

Keep your expectations realistic. The museum says it gets a lot of interest. It will contact everyone who registers but cannot promise everyone a place at an open session. If you have a question before then, email museumvolunteers@manchester.ac.uk. The team aims to reply within 10 working days. If you belong to a community group or language school, ask whether it works with the museum, since community partners are the current focus.

Children, families and fitting it around your week

Neither page gives age limits for volunteers, and the roles it describes are clearly for adults. Treat this as something for you rather than your children. If you have a teenager who wants to get involved, ask the organisation about its rules.

Your children can still get something out of it. The museum’s engagement programme runs events, workshops and activities for visitors of all ages, so the family can visit while you settle in as a volunteer. Macc’s news section has also featured Greater Manchester Combined Authority career resources for young people, which older children may find useful. You agree hours with each organisation, and opening times are on the venues’ own sites.

FAQ

Can I volunteer at Manchester Museum right now?

Not straight away. The museum has recently finished a student recruitment round and plans to share an update about the next one in early 2027. Check its volunteering page then and register your interest once recruitment opens.

Do I need museum experience?

No. The museum says it welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds and offers training, including Visual Awareness and accessibility-focused workshops. The open sessions let you ask questions and see whether a role suits you before you commit.

Where else can I find volunteering in Manchester?

Start with Manchester Community Central’s Volunteer Centre Manchester page, which collects the city’s volunteering, support for groups and ways to get involved. If you have board or management experience, look at its trusteeship pages too.

Can my children volunteer with me?

The pages do not give age limits, and the roles they describe suit adults, so ask the organisation directly. In the meantime, the museum’s engagement programme runs events and activities for visitors of all ages.
