After months of anticipation, Apple Intelligence has officially launched across the European Union, bringing a suite of AI-powered features to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users throughout the continent. The rollout, which began this week, marks a significant milestone in Apple’s effort to bring on-device intelligence to its global user base while navigating the complex regulatory landscape of the EU’s Digital Markets Act and AI Act.
What’s Included in the European Launch
The European release includes the full Apple Intelligence feature set: Writing Tools for summarising and proofreading across apps, Image Playground for AI-generated visuals, Genmoji for custom emoji creation, and a deeper Siri integration powered by large language models. Crucially, all core intelligence processing happens on-device using Apple’s A17 Pro and M-series chips, with Private Cloud Compute handling more complex requests while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
One notable adaptation for the European market is the enhanced transparency around AI decision-making. Apple has implemented detailed model cards and explainability reports accessible directly from the Settings app — a feature that aligns with the EU AI Act’s requirements for high-risk AI systems.
Regulatory Navigation
Apple’s path to the European launch wasn’t straightforward. The company had initially delayed the release citing “regulatory uncertainties” around the DMA’s interoperability requirements. After months of dialogue with the European Commission, Apple reached an agreement that allows its AI features to operate while ensuring third-party developers can access core platform functionalities under fair terms.
The compromise framework enables competitors to integrate their own AI models with Siri and other system-level features through approved APIs, though Apple retains control over the privacy and security layers that govern on-device processing.
What It Means for Users
For everyday users across the Netherlands and the broader EU, the launch means access to the same AI capabilities that US users have enjoyed since late 2025. Writing Tools can summarise lengthy emails, proofread documents in multiple European languages, and rewrite text in different tones. The Photos app gains natural language search and AI-powered cleanup tools for removing unwanted objects from images.
Early feedback from European tech reviewers has been largely positive, with particular praise for the multilingual support — Apple Intelligence now handles Dutch, French, German, Spanish, and Italian natively alongside English. As Apple continues to expand its AI capabilities, the European launch signals the company’s commitment to competing with Google and Samsung in the increasingly AI-driven smartphone market.
The phased rollout will continue through July 2026, with users receiving the update automatically when their device region is activated. iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 series, and M1-and-newer iPads and Macs are all eligible for the full feature set.
