Mozilla is making its Firefox Smart Window a more capable AI browsing assistant. The opt-in beta feature can now pull from current web information and show source links inside its chat responses. That update arrives through a new partnership with Exa, a search startup focused on AI-native web queries.

The update also makes it easier to sort through your own browsing history. You can now search what you have already visited using plain, natural language. Ask it to find “running shoes I looked at last week” and it surfaces the links and images from those pages.

Smart Window can also suggest tab groups automatically. It spots duplicate tabs and closes them, which helps you keep track of what actually matters. Instead of only presenting fresh search results, the AI sorts through what you have already seen. It adds citations for anything it pulls up through Exa.

The Verge saw a live demo of the feature in action. It sorted through selected links in a browsing history and pulled up product images from sites visited earlier. The suggested tab groups could find and close duplicates in a single step.

Mozilla says the goal is to help you check answers or find your place again. You might remember what was on a page without remembering which page it was. Beta testers told Mozilla the feature helped them keep their train of thought while working.

Future updates will add Chrome-like surfacing of recent browsing journeys. Mozilla also plans an AI-powered autofill for online forms. Smart Window remains an opt-in beta for now. Ajit Varma, Mozilla’s head of Firefox, told The Verge there is no precise date yet for it to leave beta.

Mozilla is positioning Smart Window as a privacy-focused alternative to assistants that take over the browser. The company says the feature is user-first and does not hijack your browsing. It is a similar bet to Meta’s new native Mac app, which also pushes AI helpers deeper into daily software. Read the full report on The Verge.
