Wednesday opens with the Tweede Kamer starting its debate on the national budget and a rail union asking politicians to protect train staff. Elsewhere, police are dealing with stabbings in Arnhem, and Rotterdam is rethinking its new fences on the Coolsingel.

Stabbings reported at three spots in central Arnhem

Stabbings were reported in at least three locations in Arnhem’s city center on Tuesday evening. At least one person was taken to hospital. Few further details are available so far, so anyone living in or travelling through Arnhem should follow local updates.

Budget debate begins as rail union raises alarm over aggression

The Tweede Kamer starts the General Financial Debate today, the parliamentary discussion of the government’s budget. Rotterdam pedestrians ignore new Coolsingel fences

In Rotterdam, the new permanent fences on the Coolsingel are failing to stop many pedestrians, who squeeze through them or step over them in large numbers. The municipality calls this behaviour dangerous and does not rule out changing the fences. If you walk this route, expect the layout to remain a point of discussion.

Former FC Utrecht player still waiting on GVVV return

Barry Maguire, the 36-year-old former FC Utrecht player, was removed from the squad of Veenendaal club GVVV at the end of August after a disagreement with trainer Dennis van Beukering. The trainer has since been dismissed, which would seem to clear the way for Maguire to rejoin the Tweede Divisie side. That has not happened yet, and his return remains uncertain.
