Etsy is tightening its rules on artificial intelligence. The company announced new listing policies meant to cut down on the flood of AI slop across its marketplace. Etsy said buyers and sellers both pushed for the change.
The company explained the reasoning in its announcement. Many active buyers say they cannot tell which items involve AI-generated content. Sellers also complained about their work appearing next to listings that use AI in misleading ways.
One Unedited Photo Is Now Mandatory
Every listing must now include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. All photos on a listing must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive. Images after the first one can still be edited with software or AI tools, as long as the final result stays accurate.
Etsy published examples of the misleading images it now prohibits. One showed a stuffed cat rendered in a way that did not match the physical product. The company is treating photo accuracy as a consumer protection issue, not just a style preference.
Uploads now trigger an honesty prompt. If Etsy detects that an image may be AI-generated, a pop-up asks the seller to say whether AI was used. Buyers who receive something materially different from the listing can now trigger a refund obligation for the seller.
Guides and Bots Face New Limits
Sellers who offer functional guides face stricter rules too. Patterns, recipes and instructions must be the seller’s own work and not generated by AI. Sellers also have to show an actual result made from the guide before listing it.
Listings created by bots are no longer allowed at all. Etsy is stopping automated shops from filling search results with machine-made product pages. The platform says it wants human sellers to remain visible in its marketplace.
AI-generated art is still permitted on Etsy. Sellers must simply disclose that the work was made with AI. The company is drawing a line between disclosed creative use and deceptive product photography.
The policy lands as marketplaces everywhere wrestle with synthetic content. Research on fabricated papers shows how quickly AI output can swamp a platform’s quality signals. Etsy’s answer is disclosure plus one honest photo per item, and it puts the refund risk on sellers who break the rule.
