Wednesday brings a dry autumn day for most of the country, while MPs in The Hague debate how the government spends money on roads and bridges. Here is what internationals in the Netherlands should know.

MPs want smaller surcharges on late traffic fines

The PRO and CDA parties have proposed lowering the penalties for people who do not pay traffic fines on time. At the moment, a late payment can push the amount up to three times the original fine. If you drive or cycle here and have ever missed a payment deadline, this change would directly limit how much a small fine can grow.

Acceptance of gay people falls in sports clubs

Members of Dutch sports clubs have become much less accepting of homosexuality over the last generation, according to a survey of attitudes. Many newcomers join a local club to settle in and meet people, so this finding matters to anyone weighing how welcoming those spaces really are.

Infrastructure debate, a seance trial in Utrecht and mild weather

The Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, debates spending on bridges, roads, locks and other infrastructure today, and in Utrecht women go on trial for holding a seance at children’s graves. Expect sun mixed with some cloud, mostly dry, with highs of 14 or 15 degrees and a moderate southwest wind. Clouds thicken this evening with a chance of light rain outside the south, followed by several calm autumn days with sun, cloud and occasional fog.

Amsterdam lacks its own cyber warning service

Amsterdam has no warning service of its own for cyber threats, even though those threats keep spreading, Het Parool reports. One person in the report sums it up bluntly: “We have been asleep.” For a city that presents itself as a tech hub, this is an open gap.

Family loses 250-year-old farmhouse to fire

In Vlist, a 250-year-old farmhouse on the West-Vlisterdijk was completely destroyed in a large fire. “It is a matter of clearing up and starting again,” said brother-in-law Kees Spruit, as the family works out what comes next. Neighbours said they had feared the flames would spread to their own home.
