The Netherlands has nominated Klaas Knot, the former president of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), as its candidate to become the next president of the European Central Bank (ECB). The post is opening up because the current president, Christine Lagarde, is leaving before her term ends, NOS reports.

What happened

According to NOS, the Dutch Ministry of Finance has said that, in the Netherlands’ view, Knot is the best person to succeed Lagarde. Knot was president of DNB, the Dutch central bank, from 2011 to 2025. Before he took the top job there, he worked at the bank as an economist and a strategist.

The vacancy comes earlier than planned. NOS reports that Lagarde announced last week that she will leave the ECB on 7 February, although her term was due to run until the end of October 2027. She is reportedly a candidate to chair the World Economic Forum.

The selection process is now under way. NOS says that member states of the European Union have until Friday to put forward candidates. At a meeting of EU finance ministers next Monday, the nominations will be reviewed. A decision on the new president is expected in mid-December.

Winning the post requires broad support. According to NOS, the successful candidate needs the backing of at least 16 of the 21 EU countries that use the euro. Those countries must also together represent at least 65 per cent of the population of the eurozone.

Knot is not a surprise choice. NOS notes that his name has come up as a possible successor at the ECB ever since he left DNB. He is seen as a leading candidate, and NOS reports that his strongest competition is expected to come from Pablo Hernández de Cos, the former governor of the Spanish central bank.

When Knot stepped down from DNB last year, he received a rare and senior royal honour: he was made a Grand Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau, NOS reports.

If he is chosen, he would not be the first Dutch head of the ECB. NOS points out that Wim Duisenberg was the bank’s first president, serving from 1998 until the end of 2003, and that he played an important role in the introduction of the euro.

Why it matters if you live in Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the countries that pay with the euro, so the ECB is the central bank for the currency used in Dutch shops, wages, rents and savings accounts. The person who leads it heads the institution responsible for the euro. NOS does not go into what policy changes, if any, a new president might bring, and it does not say how Knot would approach the role, so it is too early to link this nomination to specific effects on prices or borrowing costs.

What the source does make clear is that the Dutch government is actively seeking one of the most senior economic posts in Europe. The nomination comes from the Ministry of Finance, which means this is a government decision rather than something voters decide directly. If you follow Dutch politics, it shows the cabinet putting forward a candidate with deep roots in the Dutch financial system: Knot spent his career at DNB as an economist, strategist and later president.

The voting rules also explain why the outcome is far from settled. Under the system NOS describes, a candidate needs support from at least 16 of the 21 euro countries, and those countries must together account for at least 65 per cent of the eurozone population. In practice, that means the Netherlands cannot secure the job on its own and will need the backing of larger member states as well as a majority of smaller ones.

For internationals who have moved here from other eurozone countries, the contest may also be followed closely at home. NOS identifies a Spanish candidate, Pablo Hernández de Cos, as Knot’s main rival, so the race is likely to attract attention in more than one capital.

Finally, a successful nomination would mean a Dutch president at the ECB for the first time since Wim Duisenberg, who led the bank during the period when the euro was introduced, according to NOS.

What to watch next

The first deadline is this Friday, when nominations from EU member states close. That will show whether other countries put forward their own candidates and how crowded the field becomes.

Next Monday, EU finance ministers meet and will look at who has been nominated, NOS reports. This is the first point at which the list of candidates will be considered together.

The decision itself is expected in mid-December. Watch for signs of which governments are lining up behind Knot or behind Hernández de Cos, since the winner must clear both thresholds: support from at least 16 of the 21 euro countries, representing at least 65 per cent of the eurozone population.

Lagarde’s departure on 7 February sets the practical timetable. Her successor will take over a role she was originally due to hold until the end of October 2027. NOS does not say exactly when the new president would start, so look out for confirmation of the handover date once the choice is made.
