Nothing will ship its first AI-native product next month. CEO Carl Pei announced the December launch in a post on X this week.
He gave away very little about the hardware. He did confirm one thing clearly. The device will not have a screen.
“Our first AI-native product ships next month. It’s a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product. It has no new screen, and it couldn’t have been an app.”

Pei shared an image with that post. It shows “NOTHING(R)” in the top left corner above an ambiguous black rounded corner. That is the entire tease.
Glasses are the leading rumor
A rumor last month claimed Nothing is planning two pairs of AI smart glasses. One of those pairs would ship without cameras. An earlier rumor said the company is repositioning itself as an AI-first business built around accessories.
Nothing has not confirmed any of that. The company’s public messaging has moved steadily toward AI over the past year. Pei announced plans for AI-native devices and an AI operating system just over a year ago.
A crowded graveyard of screen-free gadgets
Nothing is not entering empty space. The Humane AI pin launched with heavy hype and failed commercially. The Friend pendant drew attention and then criticism. AI stuffed animals are now a real product category.
OpenAI is reportedly building an AI smart speaker with Jony Ive. Every major lab wants a physical product that makes its assistant part of daily life rather than an app you open.
Pei addressed that pattern directly. He said the industry is hunting for its iPhone moment. The pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion, all attempts at the same prize.
His conclusion was blunt. “Looking for the iPhone of AI today is a dead end.”
Why the no-screen claim matters
Skipping a display lowers cost, extends battery life, and removes the pressure to compete with phones. It also removes the main way people currently interact with AI. Voice and ambient sensing have to carry the whole experience.
Nothing has a design reputation that most AI hardware startups lack. It also has a phone business that gives it retail reach. Whether that is enough to succeed where Humane failed is the open question.
The launch is roughly four weeks away. Expect more teasers before then.
