The New York Times Is in Exclusive Talks to Buy Letterboxd for About $330 Million

The New York Times Company is in exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd. The price is around $330 million, according to a report published by the Times itself. Letterboxd is the social network where film fans log, rate, and argue about movies.

Sale rumors had been circling for months. Sony Pictures Entertainment and A24 were both named as possible buyers. The Times now looks like the frontrunner.

The talks have covered how the company would run after a deal closes. Letterboxd’s co-founders could stay in charge, but they would report to a Times Company executive. The site would likely remain standalone for the “foreseeable future.”

Advertising is the obvious overlap. The Times Company would plug Letterboxd into its ad technology, which already serves a large audience of paying subscribers. Letterboxd brings a young and highly engaged audience that studios want to reach.

Nobody involved is confirming anything yet. A Times spokesperson, Charlie Stadtlander, declined to comment. Letterboxd and its current parent company, Tiny Ltd., did not reply to a request from The Verge.

A pattern of small, targeted purchases

The deal would fit the Times Company’s recent playbook. It bought Wordle in a deal in “the low seven figures.” It bought Wirecutter for “slightly more than $30 million.” It bought The Athletic for $550 million.

Each purchase added a habit rather than a newsroom. Wordle added a daily ritual. Wirecutter added shopping advice. The Athletic added sports coverage that keeps subscribers renewing.

Letterboxd would add culture. Its users post reviews, build watchlists, and follow friends instead of professional critics. That is a different kind of engagement from reading a review on a newspaper site.

What changes for users

Probably very little at first. A standalone Letterboxd with the same founders in place suggests the product will not be folded into the Times app. Users have watched other beloved apps get absorbed and stripped down, so that reassurance carries weight.

The harder question is data. A film diary reveals taste, and taste is valuable to advertisers and to studios planning releases. How the Times Company handles that data will decide whether the community stays.

A $330 million price is a bet on attention. If the audience stays put, the ad technology does the rest of the work.
