From December, Frankfurt’s U5 underground line will stop running to the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) and will end at Konstablerwache instead. According to the Frankfurter Neue Presse, the change is needed for construction work on the U5 extension to the Europaviertel and is expected to last through 2027.

What happened

On Thursday, Frankfurt’s Mobilitätsdezernent (the city councillor responsible for transport), Yannick Schwander of the CDU, announced that the U5 will be shortened from December. The line, which starts in Preungesheim, currently runs to the Hauptbahnhof. Once the change takes effect, its last stop will be Konstablerwache.

Schwander said the shortened route is needed because of work on the line’s Wendeanlage, the turning facility where trains reverse. It sits at the Hauptbahnhof and runs towards Güterplatz. At Platz der Republik, the old turning tracks meet the new tracks being built for the U5 extension. For trains to run through this section later on, new tracks have to be laid, the power and control systems have to be rebuilt and connected to the existing network, and around 60 kilometres of cable have to be installed.

The project is run by the Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte GmbH (SBEV), the city company in charge of building the light rail line. The newspaper reports that SBEV cannot yet say exactly how long the shortened route will last. Schwander said the restriction would run through 2027.

The Frankfurter Neue Presse also reports that the Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF), the city’s public transport operator, and Traffiq, the local transport authority, looked at whether the U5 could turn at Bockenheimer Warte instead. SBEV said this is not possible because U4 trains run too frequently on that section.

What it means for you

If you use the U5 to reach the Hauptbahnhof, you will need to change trains from December. Schwander said passengers can switch at Konstablerwache to the U4 or to one of the S-Bahn lines (suburban rail) to continue to the main station. He admitted that “getting used to it will probably take a while”.

In practical terms:

  • Who is affected: anyone riding the U5 between Konstablerwache and the Hauptbahnhof, including people from Preungesheim and the northern districts on the line who travel to the main station.
  • Where to change: Konstablerwache, for the U4 or the S-Bahn towards the Hauptbahnhof.
  • When: from December, with the restriction expected to last through 2027. The source does not give an exact start date or end date.
  • What to check: before December, look up updated timetables and route information from the VGF and Traffiq, and allow extra time for the change at Konstablerwache, especially if you have a train or a connection to catch at the Hauptbahnhof.

What to watch next

The shortened route is part of the U5 extension from the Hauptbahnhof into the Europaviertel, the newer residential and business district west of the city centre. Schwander said the new line will give people living there new options for getting around.

Work on the future Güterplatz station is clearly underway. According to the Frankfurter Neue Presse, workers closed the station roof in August, covering what had been a 24-metre-deep pit, the depth of eight storeys. Two tracks can already be seen inside the station, and a 25-centimetre-thick reinforced concrete slab is being built for the platform. One exit is planned to lead directly to the Citadines hotel.

SBEV’s managing directors, Florian Habersack and Ingo Kühn, said the firm plan is still for the U5 to start running in 2029. Construction should be finished in 2028, followed by commissioning, including test runs. Habersack said SBEV still aims to open the section from the Europaviertel to Römerhof by 2029, but admitted that will be difficult.

The newspaper notes that earlier work was delayed several times because few companies responded to tenders, or they asked for prices that were too high. Kühn said this has improved and that all the work has now been put out to tender. Schwander said some aspects of the Römerhof connection are “not entirely clear at the moment”, but that the partial opening to the Europaviertel will go ahead in any case.

Residents should watch for the exact start date of the shortened U5 route in December, for any update from SBEV on how long it will last, and for news on whether the 2029 opening dates hold.
