AI Officiating in 2026: How Technology Is Taking Over Sport

The referee’s whistle may soon be joined by something far more precise: an algorithm. Across the world’s biggest sports leagues and competitions, artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how games are officiated, analysed, and experienced — and the shift is accelerating faster than most fans realise.

From VAR to AI-Powered Offside Detection

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, FIFA and Lenovo introduced AI-enabled 3D player avatars. Every competing player was digitally scanned before the tournament, creating a precise three-dimensional model used in the host broadcast. When the semi-automated offside technology triggers, referees and viewers no longer see a flat blue line on screen — they see a fully rendered 3D reconstruction of the moment in question. FIFA’s upgraded system can now flag incidents where a player is more than 10 centimetres offside, with decisions delivered in seconds rather than minutes.

The official tournament ball, the Trionda, contains an inertial measurement unit sensor chip that captures data 500 times per second, tracking acceleration and movement in three dimensions. Combined with stadium cameras and AI models, every kick, spin, and deflection is catalogued in real time — data that feeds both officiating systems and broadcast graphics.

Baseball Goes Automated

Major League Baseball has taken one of the boldest steps in professional sport by introducing an automated ball-strike system for the 2026 season. After years of testing in the minor leagues, the technology uses a network of cameras and radar to determine whether each pitch crosses the strike zone. Human umpires remain on the field, but the ball-strike call arrives via earpiece — removing one of the most debated decisions in the game from subjective human judgement entirely.

The league’s data shows the system calls strikes with a margin of error of under two millimetres. Players and coaches filed fewer than a fifth of the formal challenges in 2026 compared to the equivalent period in previous seasons — a sign that even those with the most to lose are beginning to trust the technology.

The NBA’s Vision for Objective Calls

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been candid about where the league is heading. Speaking at a technology conference in May 2026, Silver said he expects the NBA will eventually adopt a system using AI to rule on “objective” calls — out-of-bounds decisions, goaltending, and similar situations — using cameras positioned around the court perimeter. The goal is to make such calls instantaneous and automatic, removing the need for lengthy video reviews that interrupt the flow of play.

The NHL and WNBA have signalled similar ambitions. All three leagues are investing in infrastructure to collect the kind of high-resolution spatial data that makes AI officiating possible. It is not a question of whether the technology works — it demonstrably does — but of how quickly leagues are willing to trust machines over human instinct in high-stakes moments.

Performance Analytics: The Quieter Revolution

While officiating grabs headlines, AI’s impact on player performance and injury prevention may be even more significant. More than 80 percent of professional sports organisations now use some form of AI analytics, according to a February 2026 report by SportsPro and Sportradar. The global market for AI in sports is projected to grow from $7.63 billion in 2025 to nearly $27 billion by 2030.

Teams are using machine learning models to assess fatigue, predict injury risk, and optimise training loads based on biometric data collected during matches and sessions. In European football, several top clubs have reduced soft-tissue injuries by over 20 percent after implementing AI-driven recovery protocols. In basketball, player tracking systems can now model the probability of a specific play succeeding in real time, giving coaches data-driven guidance on substitutions and tactical adjustments.

Fan Experience and Broadcast Innovation

AI is also reshaping how fans watch sport. Broadcasters are using generative AI to produce personalised highlight packages, tailored to each viewer’s favourite team and players, delivered within minutes of full-time. Natural language interfaces allow fans to query match statistics conversationally, asking questions like “How many times did the centre-back win a header in the second half?” and receiving accurate answers instantly.

At the stadium level, AI-powered crowd management systems monitor entry queues, concession demand, and security risks in real time, improving both safety and the matchday experience.

The Debate That Won’t Go Away

Not everyone is embracing the shift. Critics argue that AI officiating removes the human element that makes sport compelling — that debatable decisions are part of the drama. Others raise concerns about data ownership, the cost of implementation for smaller clubs and leagues, and the risk of over-reliance on systems that can fail or be manipulated.

These are legitimate concerns, and the sports world is still finding the right balance. But the direction of travel is unmistakable. AI is not replacing the sport — it is making the infrastructure around it smarter, faster, and more accountable.
