The World Cup Where AI Called the Offsides

The 2026 World Cup ended Sunday night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, in front of 82,500 people and the first halftime show in the tournament’s history. Underneath the spectacle, a quieter project also crossed its finish line. Across 39 days, 16 stadiums and 104 matches, FIFA ran the most heavily instrumented tournament football has ever seen, with artificial intelligence wired into the officiating chain from the opening match in Mexico City to the final whistle in East Rutherford.

The tournament’s champion will dominate the front pages for weeks. The technology that ran beneath it may end up mattering longer.

The flag goes up faster

The headline system was what FIFA calls advanced semi-automated offside technology, deployed at a World Cup for the first time. The version used in Qatar in 2022 sent offside alerts to the video assistant referee, who then relayed decisions down to the pitch. This year the system skipped the middleman. Clear positional offsides went directly to the officials on the field.

“Instantly, the assistant referees can flag for positional offsides, allowing a much quicker decision,” FIFA’s director of innovation, Johannes Holzmüller, explained when the federation unveiled the tournament stack in June. The speed matters for more than convenience. Faster flags mean fewer pointless sprints toward goal after the ball is dead, which FIFA argues reduces injury risk in exactly the moments when defenders and attackers are running at full tilt for nothing.

The system leans on optical player tracking plus a sensor suspended inside the Trionda match ball that reports its motion 500 times a second. Its authority has a hard boundary, though. The technology rules only on positional offside, the geometric question of where bodies were when the ball was played. Whether an offside player actually interfered with play remains a human judgment, made by referees with access to the data rather than replaced by it.

Every player got a digital twin

Before the tournament, every participating player was scanned in 3D, and those digital avatars were built into both the offside system and the broadcast product. When a tight call went to review, viewers saw a rendered replay in which the players actually looked like themselves, with the offending shoulder or boot picked out unmistakably.

Feeding all of this were 16 optical tracking cameras installed in each stadium, generating more than 150 million tracking data points per match. That volume let FIFA recreate entire games in 3D and hand the feed to the VAR for questions that used to be pure argument, such as whether an attacker standing in an offside position blocked the goalkeeper’s view of the ball, or whether the ball drifted over the touchline in the build-up to a goal.

Analytics for the minnows

The less visible innovation may prove the most consequential. Football AI Pro, a generative AI assistant developed with Lenovo, FIFA’s official technology partner, gave all 48 teams the same access to pre- and post-match analysis. Until now, FIFA handed teams raw data and reports running 50 or 60 pages per match, useful only to squads wealthy enough to travel with a staff of analysts.

“Probably not every participating team can afford a huge team of match analysts to the World Cup,” Holzmüller said. “By providing all teams with the same access to the latest technology, we hope we can also democratise the use, the access and the benefits.” For a tournament that expanded to 48 teams precisely to bring in smaller footballing nations, giving those nations the analytical firepower of the giants is not a small gesture.

The referee body cameras, first trialled at the Club World Cup in 2025, also returned in upgraded form. Lenovo’s engineers cut the motion blur that plagued the original footage, and the stabilised first-person feed became a fixture of broadcast coverage.

The referee is becoming a system

Football is not alone here. Baseball’s automated ball-strike challenge system reached the major leagues this season, and the pattern is consistent across sports: the machine handles the measurable, humans keep the judgment calls, and fans get a visualisation that makes the decision legible instead of mysterious.

The open question is what happens next. Advanced offside technology and 3D match recreation were built for a month-long showcase with FIFA’s budget behind them. Domestic leagues will now have to decide whether the standard set this summer becomes the standard fans expect every weekend, and who pays for it. The 2026 World Cup answered whether AI officiating works at the sport’s highest level. The harder economics start now.
