MLB Robot Umpire Data: 55% of Calls Overturned

Fifty-five percent. That is the share of umpire ball-strike calls that have been overturned in the first stretch of Major League Baseball’s 2026 season, out of nearly a thousand pitches players have formally challenged. Put another way, when a big league hitter or catcher is confident enough to burn a challenge, the machine agrees with them more often than not.

The Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System arrived in the majors this season after the Joint Competition Committee approved it, following several years of minor league testing and trial runs in spring training and the 2025 All-Star Game. It is not a robot umpire in the sense fans spent a decade arguing about. Human umpires still call every pitch. The technology only intervenes when a player asks it to.

How the challenge works

Each team gets two challenges per game and keeps them when they are right. Only the pitcher, catcher, or batter can trigger one, and the request has to come immediately after the pitch, which rules out the dugout reviewing footage and sending word out. Teams that exhaust their challenges in regulation get one more for each extra inning they start without any.

Hawk-Eye tracking runs continuously in the background, logging where every pitch crossed relative to that batter’s zone. When a call is challenged, the Hawk-Eye rendering travels over a private 5G network supplied by T-Mobile and appears almost instantly on the stadium videoboard and in the television broadcast. The whole sequence takes seconds, which is the design point. Baseball has enough dead air.

Who is actually good at this

The split in the data is the most interesting thing to come out of the season so far. Defence is better at challenging than offence, and it is not close. Roughly 61 percent of challenges initiated by the fielding side have been overturned, against 47 percent for batters. Spring training told the same story: 60 percent success for the defence, 45 percent for hitters, across 1,844 challenges.

That gap makes sense once you think about vantage point. A catcher receives the pitch and feels exactly where the glove was. A batter is reacting to a ball travelling at ninety-plus miles an hour while deciding whether to swing, and he is doing it from the side of the plate. One of those people has better information.

Spring training averaged 4.32 challenges per game with 2.28 succeeding. Players who have used the system describe the judgement call as harder than it appears from the couch, which tracks with hitters getting it wrong more than half the time.

The consequences nobody advertised

Walk rate has climbed to 9.6 percent, the highest across any full season in the past decade. That is a meaningful shift in how games are being played, and it points at something specific: strikes that used to get called on the edges are not getting called anymore, or they are getting overturned when they do.

Which brings up catchers. Pitch framing, the subtle art of receiving a borderline pitch so it looks like a strike, has been one of the most valuable and least visible skills in baseball for over a decade. Teams built roster strategy around it. The framing metric has dropped to 0.565 this season, close to a 20 percent decline. The skill has not vanished, since umpires still make the initial call on every pitch and framing still influences that. But its ceiling has come down, because the best-framed ball in the world can be challenged and reversed on a screen in front of forty thousand people.

Why this version worked

Full automation was always the obvious endpoint and always the unpopular one. Handing every call to a computer would have stripped the umpire of authority and given fans nothing to argue about, which is a strange goal for a sport that runs partly on argument. The challenge format keeps the human in charge and makes the technology an appeal, not an authority.

It also turns out to be good television. The videoboard animation gives the crowd a moment of collective suspense that did not exist before, and broadcasters get a clean visual for something that used to require a slow-motion replay and a commentator squinting at a strike zone overlay.

The number to watch through the rest of the season is that 55 percent overturn rate. If it holds, it suggests umpires are missing roughly one challengeable call per game that players can identify in real time. If it falls, it means players are learning to challenge better and umpires are adjusting to a zone they now know is being measured. Either direction tells you something about how quickly a century-old profession adapts when the scoreboard starts grading it.
