FC Barcelona beat Betis 5-2 at La Cartuja on Saturday, making it nine wins from nine in the 2026/27 La Liga season. That equals the best start in the league’s history, a record Real Madrid have held alone since 1968/69.
Nine from nine
Real Madrid won their first nine league matches in 1968/69 and scored 21 goals in the process. Hansi Flick’s side have now matched that run with far more goals. Barcelona have scored 39 times in their nine games so far and conceded just nine.
The win at Betis was the latest in what the club calls a spectacular start to the campaign. Flick’s team have won every league match they have played this season, and the result in Seville confirms them as the side setting the pace in Spain.
Passing the Martino side
Saturday’s victory also took this team past one of Barcelona’s own benchmarks. In 2013/14, a Barça side coached by Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, with Leo Messi, Pedro and Neymar in the squad, won its first eight league matches. That run ended with a goalless draw against Osasuna in Pamplona.
No Barcelona team had started a league season better than that one. Flick’s players have now gone one match further, and the only start that matches theirs belongs to their biggest rival.
A Clásico with a record at stake
The record could be Barcelona’s alone within a week, and the opponent is Real Madrid. Next Sunday’s league Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou now has even more riding on it. A win would give Flick’s side a perfect ten from ten in La Liga in 2026/27 and take the record from the club that has held it for more than half a century.
For readers in the Netherlands who follow Spanish football, the match is one to keep in the calendar. Barcelona need one more win to move past the 1968/69 Real Madrid side, and they have to beat Real Madrid to get it.
