When the season starts

In Berlin a Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) is something you drop into after work, not something you see once and tick off a list. According to visitBerlin, the official season begins on 22 November 2026, but some stalls open well before that. The first to open are the Christmas fair in Lichtenberg and the Winterwelt (Winter World) at Potsdamer Platz, where a 70-metre winter slide opens from 31 October.

The city portal berlin.de lists three early openers: the Lichtenberger Winterzeit fair on Landsberger Allee, which has mulled wine and a funfair feel; the LGBTIQA Winterdays and Christmas Avenue on Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg, with festive lighting, a stage programme and good food; and the Medieval Christmas Market at the RAW Compound in Friedrichshain. Closing dates differ from market to market, so check each listing on berlin.de before you plan a late visit.

Berlin has more than 100 markets, so the most useful tool is the berlin.de Christmas market search. It shows which markets are open today, tomorrow or next weekend. The same portal has a map view and a list of markets that stay open “between the years”, which is the German phrase (zwischen den Jahren) for the days between Christmas and New Year.

The central markets

These are the markets your colleagues will suggest for a first visit. Expect crowds at weekends. Addresses come from visitBerlin.

  • WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt, Gendarmenmarkt, 10117 Berlin. “WeihnachtsZauber” means Christmas magic. Berlin.de names it as one of the best-known markets in Mitte.
  • Berliner Weihnachtszeit at the Rotes Rathaus (Berlin Christmas Time at the Red City Hall), by the Neptunbrunnen (Neptune Fountain) at Alexanderplatz, Spandauer Straße, 10178 Berlin.
  • Christmas market at Alexanderplatz, 10178 Berlin, a short walk from the one above.
  • Winter Market Schlossplatz at the Humboldt Forum (the museum in the rebuilt city palace), Schloßplatz, 10178 Berlin.
  • Christmas market at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church), Breitscheidplatz 1, 10789 Berlin.
  • Christmas market at Schloss Charlottenburg (Charlottenburg Palace), Spandauer Damm 22, 14059 Berlin.
  • Spandau Christmas market, Marktplatz Spandau, Marktstraße 4 A, 13597 Berlin. Berlin.de calls Spandau a long-standing insider tip and says the old-town market alone draws large numbers of Berliners every year.

The official pages do not give opening hours or food prices for these markets in this overview. Each market’s listing on berlin.de or visitBerlin has the current details.

Neighbourhood markets

Many residents prefer smaller markets close to home, where you are more likely to meet neighbours than tour groups. Berlin.de describes the markets in Tempelhof as cosy and traditional, set around the old village greens. In Neukölln you will find markets with a historical feel, including the Alt-Rixdorf Christmas Market at Richardplatz 1, 12055 Berlin. Rixdorf is the old village at the heart of Neukölln.

Other local favourites on the berlin.de list include the Advent Market on Kollwitzplatz, the Advent Market on Karl-August-Platz, the Pankow Advent Market at Heynhöfe, the Advent Market in Leonhardtstraße and Christmas in Westend. If you live in Wedding, berlin.de says the Weddingmarkt runs on weekends throughout Advent.

Two markets are worth the trip to the south-west. The Advent market at Domäne Dahlem, a historic farm estate and museum (Landgut und Museum), is at Königin-Luise-Straße 49, 14195 Berlin. Advent Lichter Genuss (“Advent lights and treats”) takes place in the Natur Park Schöneberger Südgelände, a nature park on old railway land. The entrance is the rear exit of S-Bahnhof Priesterweg (Priesterweg suburban train station), 10829 Berlin.

Markets for families

If you have children, the district pages on berlin.de are a good place to start. They describe the markets in Prenzlauer Berg as child-friendly and environmentally conscious. In Weißensee, Santa Claus visits the children at the local markets. Reinickendorf’s markets are described as good for families and art lovers.

Several venues run separate ticketed winter events that families often combine with a market visit. visitBerlin lists Christmas in the Tierpark at Tierpark Berlin (the city’s large animal park in the east), Am Tierpark 125, 10319 Berlin, and the Christmas Garden Berlin at the Botanischer Garten (Botanical Garden), Königin-Luise-Straße 68, 14195 Berlin. Both have a “Buy tickets” link on visitBerlin, so plan to book. Prices and time slots are on their own ticket pages.

Children who love animals may also enjoy the Christmas Market at the Berlin Animal Shelter or the Berlin Dog Christmas Market, both on the berlin.de list. The 70-metre slide at the Potsdamer Platz Winterwelt is another easy win from 31 October. Check the venue’s own site for any age or height rules, because the official pages do not state them.

Alternative, international and adult evenings

Berlin.de has a separate section on design Christmas markets, which it calls young, alternative markets with creative gift ideas and a club atmosphere. Holy Shit Shopping is on its list. Friedrichshain has the Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt (historical Christmas market) at the RAW-Gelände, a former railway repair yard turned cultural centre at Revaler Straße 99, 10245 Berlin. Nearby is the Heissa Holzmarkt winter festival at Holzmarktstraße 25, 10243 Berlin.

For an evening with friends, the Wein-Nachtsmarkt at Ludwig-Beck-Platz is a play on Weihnachtsmarkt and Wein (wine). The Sustainable Christmas Market on Sophienstraße suits anyone who wants to shop more thoughtfully. The LGBTQIA* Winterdays and Christmas Avenue at Nollendorfplatz, 10777 Berlin, has a stage programme and runs from early in the season.

If you miss your own country’s traditions, berlin.de has a list of international markets. Among them are the Finnish Advent Bazaar, the Swedish Christmas Bazaar and the Lucia Christmas Market at Kulturbrauerei, a former brewery in Prenzlauer Berg. Berlin’s first Japanese Christmas market is in Schöneberg.
