Binance says it has replaced most of the money stolen from its customers in the largest crypto heist on record. Hackers took $6.3 billion from user funds, and the exchange’s CEO now claims 90 percent of that has been replenished.
The company is covering the losses from its own balance sheet rather than waiting for recovery. That choice keeps customer balances whole on paper, but it also means Binance absorbs a multi-billion-dollar hit directly.
What the Last 10 Percent Means
The remaining $630 million sits in what Binance calls “less liquid” tokens. Those are assets the exchange cannot buy quickly without moving prices, so replacing them takes longer than swapping stablecoins.
Binance said in a post on X that the shortfall will be covered in full. The company framed the plan around measurable progress, transparent reporting, and concrete actions rather than a single deadline.
Withdrawals stay paused for now. Binance says it remains on track to reopen withdrawal services on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and will publish details once confirmed.
Why Customers Are Watching Withdrawals Closely
A paused withdrawal button is the single clearest stress signal at any exchange. Deposits can keep flowing in during an outage, but users only learn the truth when they try to move funds out.
Binance has promised the reopening date publicly, which raises the cost of slipping. If withdrawals resume on schedule and balances match, the story becomes an expensive operational failure. If they slip again, the questions get harder.
The heist also resets the benchmark for exchange security. A $6.3 billion loss dwarfs earlier incidents, including the collapses that defined the last crypto winter.
The Bigger Question Nobody Has Answered
Binance has not explained how attackers reached customer funds, which custody setup failed, or what changes are now in place. Those details matter more than the reimbursement number for anyone deciding where to park coins.
Publishing a post-mortem would also help regulators. Crypto exchanges operate under growing disclosure rules in Europe, and a loss of this size invites scrutiny of reserve claims.
For now the sequence is simple. Withdrawals on Sunday, a public accounting of the remaining tokens, and a security review that customers have not yet seen.
