iFixit has taken the iPhone Duo apart, and its teardown answers a question owners have asked since launch. The repair specialists published their findings this week, complete with microscope shots and a hinge postmortem.
The phone earned a repairability score of 5 out of 10. That number looks modest at first glance. It is actually the highest score iFixit has ever handed to a folding phone.
The matte screen does more than cut glare
The inner display carries a matte nano-texture cover. Most reviewers treated that finish as a simple anti-glare feature. iFixit’s microscope work suggests it has a second job.
The textured surface scatters incoming light in many directions. That scattering softens reflections across the panel, and it makes the crease down the middle much harder to spot.
Zooming in further revealed oval-shaped subpixels arranged at varying angles. iFixit believes those angles cut down on visual artifacts. They also help disguise the fold line.
It is clever engineering. It also explains why the Duo’s crease looks milder than the competition’s.
Good news on the top layer, bad news underneath
The nano-texture outer layer can be replaced on its own. Technicians do not have to swap out the OLED panel sitting beneath it. That keeps one common wear item relatively affordable.
Full display repairs remain a different story. iFixit describes that job as an expensive nightmare, matching every other foldable it has opened.
Dust still found its way inside the phone. iFixit found grit in the USB-C port, the speaker grills, and the hinge, which left the mechanism feeling crunchy.
There was one small win. Less of the glowing dust iFixit uses during teardowns reached the interior than on Samsung’s Z Fold8 or Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
What may actually be cracking
Owners have reported cracked inner screens and hinges that stop closing properly. iFixit says it now has theories about both failures.
The Verge has tracked the same complaints for weeks. A YouTuber who dissected his own Duo pointed to a weak spot inside the hinge as a likely cause of what owners now call crackgate.
Apple published an official repair manual for the device on Friday. The timing looks less like a coincidence and more like a quiet response.
Demand has not suffered at all. Preorders slipped into 2027 within days of launch, and Apple has called the response extraordinary.
The Duo is still a $2,000 foldable with a fragile inner screen. A 5/10 score is real progress for the category, but it is not a promise of easy ownership.
