Munich has one of its busiest weekends of the autumn on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, according to the local paper tz. The weekend includes the Lange Nacht der Museen, the opening of a new techno club in a former printing works, the 150th anniversary of the city’s tram and the start of the autumn Auer Dult fair.

What happened

In its weekly listings, tz describes the coming days as an unusually full weekend for Munich. On Saturday 17 October, the Kirchweihdult opens at 10am on Mariahilfplatz in Au. This is the autumn edition of the Auer Dult, a traditional market and fair held around Kirchweih, the church consecration festival. The paper says visitors will find rarities and bric-a-brac for sale, food stalls and fairground rides. The Dult runs until 25 October.

The same evening, the Lange Nacht der Museen (Long Night of the Museums) runs from 6pm to 1am. Tz reports that several bus tours take visitors between the participating venues, which range from the Deutsches Theatermuseum (German Theatre Museum) to the Patentamt (Patent Office).

Also on Saturday, tz says what may become Germany’s coolest techno club is opening in its own former Druckhaus (printing house), shared with the Münchner Merkur newspaper, on Dessauerstraße in Moosach. The opening night features electronic music acts including the Zenker Brothers.

The Münchner Trambahn (Munich tram) is also celebrating its 150th birthday with an anniversary weekend. According to tz, this includes a large Korso (a parade of trams) on Saturday and an open day on Sunday at the tram depot.

What it means for you

If you are new to Munich, this weekend is an easy way to see several of the city’s traditions in a short time. These are the details tz gives:

  • Auer Dult: opens Saturday 17 October at 10am on Mariahilfplatz and runs until 25 October. The paper does not give an entry price.
  • Lange Nacht der Museen: Saturday from 6pm to 1am. Tickets and information are available at muenchner.de/museumsnacht. Check there which venues and bus routes interest you before you set off.
  • Techno club opening: Saturday from 10pm until late at the former printing house on Dessauerstraße in Moosach. Tickets cost 20 euros from printhousemunich.com.
  • Tram open day: Sunday 18 October from 10am to 5pm at the Betriebshof (tram depot) at Einsteinstraße 148. Tz says visitors can look at a tram from underneath and visit the driver’s cab.

Tz lists several smaller events for the same weekend as well. On Saturday, the Truderinger Repair Café at the Pestalozzi-Realschule, Truderinger Straße 265b, helps residents fix broken items from 2pm to 5pm, with one item per person. Also on Saturday, the Munich cabaret artist Helmut Schleich performs at the Kulturhaus Milbertshofen, Curt-Mezger-Platz 1, at 7pm, with tickets from 23 euros through München Ticket.

On Sunday, families can join a games and sports afternoon from 2pm in the western part of the Westpark, on the meadow near the Bayerwaldhaus. At 5pm, the Jüdisches Gemeindezentrum (Jewish Community Centre) hosts the concert “Shvayg Mayn Harts”, in which Michael Alexander Willens brings to life the music of his grandfathers, who were figures in Yiddish theatre. Entry is 10 euros and tickets are only available by registering in advance at festkonzert@ikg-m.de.

What to watch next

The Dult remains open until 25 October, so anyone who misses the opening weekend still has a week to go. Tz also lists events for the following weekdays:

  • Monday 19 October: the podcaster and comedy writer Ricarda Hoffmann appears at the Schlachthof, Zenettistraße 9, at 8pm. Tickets cost 29.90 euros through ticketmaster.de.
  • Tuesday 20 October: the MonteverdiChor sings works by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms and Urmas Sisask at the Matthäuskirche, Nußbaumstraße 1, at 8pm.
  • Thursday 22 October: Helmut Lotti performs at Circus Krone at 8pm, with tickets from 87 euros through München Ticket. The same evening, Luise Kinseher presents “Mary from Bavary” at the Lustspielhaus, Occamstraße 8, with tickets from 29 euros.
  • Thursday 22 October: Monika Baumgartner reads historical letters from the Stadtarchiv (city archive) in the Juristische Bibliothek (law library) at the Rathaus (city hall), room 366, at 7pm. Entry is free.

Event details can change at short notice. Check with the organisers before you go, especially for ticketed events.
