Today’s news covers Schiphol’s future, a wider tax on savings from 2028, and new national figures on falls among older people. There are also two court cases involving psychiatric treatment orders and a reminder that mosquitoes are still active this autumn.

Residents’ groups say Schiphol plans still put the airport first

Twenty-one residents’ groups and environmental organisations say the Cabinet’s plans for Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport do not protect the environment or the people living nearby, Trouw reports. The criticism adds pressure on the government as it decides the airport’s future. If you live under a flight path or are choosing where to rent or buy around Amsterdam, it is worth following this debate.

Falls send 340 people to A&E every day

Figures published today by the statistics office CBS show that 340 people a day end up at the emergency department after a fall, and 21 people a day die as a result of one. Courses to prevent falls run across the country. They are aimed at people aged 65 and over who live at home and are unsteady on their feet, afraid of falling or have fallen before, and they focus on building muscle strength, balance and coordination. If you have older relatives living here, these courses are worth knowing about.

Vlaardingen supermarket attacker ordered into psychiatric care

The court in Rotterdam has ordered a 43-year-old man from Vlaardingen into tbs with compulsory treatment for stabbing a supermarket cashier on the Van Hogendorplaan in May last year. Because the man has schizophrenia, the court did not also give him a prison sentence.

Summer is over but mosquitoes are not

The GGD public health service is warning about mosquito bites, because the common house mosquito can carry West Nile virus. The virus can cause flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or a rash. The GGD says mosquitoes stay active as long as it is warm enough outside, so it is still sensible to protect yourself this autumn.
