Shopify: AI Search Is Boosting Sales, Not Killing It

Shopify says AI search is driving more traffic and sales, not replacing Google

Publishers have spent the past two years watching AI chatbots swallow their referral traffic. Shopify says it’s living in a different universe. On August 5, the commerce company told investors that AI-driven traffic and orders to the millions of stores running on its platform tripled year over year in the second quarter. Not shrank. Not held steady. Tripled.

That single number cuts against one of the loudest fears in tech right now, which is that AI search engines answer questions in-line and never send anyone anywhere. For news sites and reference pages, that fear has teeth. When ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews summarize an article, the reader often has no reason to click through. Shopify’s argument is that shopping doesn’t work like reading, and the Q2 data is its evidence.

Why a purchase behaves differently than a page view

Think about what happens when someone asks an AI assistant to compare running shoes, find a birthday gift under fifty dollars, or track down a specific brand of ceramic cookware. The assistant can describe the options all it wants. It can’t lace the shoes onto the buyer’s feet or run their credit card. At some point the shopper has to land on a real store, look at real product photos, and check out. The transaction lives on the merchant’s site, not inside the chatbot.

That structural difference is the whole thesis. A publisher’s product is the answer itself, and once the AI delivers it, the transaction is complete. A merchant’s product sits on the other side of a click that AI can summarize but never finish. So where AI erodes the value of a news link, it can sharpen the value of a shopping link by pre-qualifying the person who follows it. Someone who arrives after asking an assistant for “the best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet” already knows what they want.

Shopify frames these AI referrals as higher-intent visitors, and the tripling covers both traffic and orders. That pairing matters. Plenty of companies can point to a surge in visits that never converts into anything. Reporting that orders grew alongside the clicks is a stronger claim, because it suggests the people showing up from AI tools are actually buying rather than bouncing.

A convenient story that happens to be measurable

It would be naive to take any platform’s growth narrative entirely at face value. Shopify has an obvious interest in casting AI as a tailwind for commerce, since anxiety about disappearing traffic is exactly the kind of thing that spooks the merchants who pay its bills. A tripling year over year also starts from whatever base existed a year ago, and AI shopping referrals were a rounding error in early 2025. Triple a small number and you still might have a modest number.

Still, the direction is what counts, and the direction is up at a moment when the default assumption runs the other way. The comparison to publishers isn’t rhetorical cover. It reflects a genuine split in how AI reshapes different corners of the web. Some businesses sell the information; those are the ones getting hollowed out. Others sell a thing that has to ship to a doorstep, and for them the AI layer is turning into a new top of the funnel rather than a wall.

The scramble to become the store AI recommends

If Shopify’s read holds, the competitive game shifts fast. Merchants won’t just optimize for Google’s ten blue links anymore. They’ll be fighting to be the product an assistant names when a shopper asks for a recommendation, which is a murkier and more concentrated contest. A search results page shows a dozen options. A chatbot often names one or two. Winning that slot could matter more than any keyword ranking ever did, and nobody has a settled playbook for how to earn it.

There’s a platform angle here too. Shopify sits between merchants and the AI tools sending traffic their way, which puts it in a position to build the plumbing that connects the two. Structured product data, checkout that an agent can hand off to cleanly, inventory an assistant can trust to be accurate. Whoever owns that connective tissue owns a lot of leverage over how AI commerce actually flows.

One quarter of tripling traffic doesn’t settle whether AI is a friend or a threat to online retail, and Shopify’s incentive to tell an optimistic story is worth keeping in view. What it does confirm is that the publisher’s nightmare isn’t a universal law. The next thing to watch is whether that gap widens as AI shopping matures, and whether the assistants themselves start deciding which stores get seen. That decision, more than any traffic chart, will shape who wins the next era of e-commerce.
