Starcloud just raised $250 million to build data centers that don’t sit on Earth at all. They orbit it. The pitch sounds like science fiction until you look at where the money is going and why, and the timing tells you something bigger is happening: the company framed the raise around a warning that launch options are drying up. Compute leaves the ground
For most of the internet’s history, a data center was a building. A big one, humming in a business park somewhere near cheap power and cold air, packed with servers and the plumbing needed to keep them from cooking themselves. The bottleneck nobody solved

Whether orbital data centers ever become a serious pillar of the compute industry is still an open question, and skepticism is fair. Plenty of elegant space concepts have never survived contact with economics. What’s harder to dismiss is the strategic read underneath the raise: that the ground is filling up, that the sky is the next frontier for heavy compute, and that the door to it is starting to close.
