A night-time curfew is in force in the centre of Toulouse from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026, from midnight to 5am. It follows violence and damage in the city during the weekend of 17 October. According to France 3 Occitanie, the state’s most senior official in the area has defended the measure ahead of a rally planned for Saturday 24 October.
What happened
France 3 Occitanie reports that a couvre-feu (curfew) now covers the hypercentre of Toulouse, the city’s innermost central district. It applies every night from midnight to 5am, from Thursday 22 October to Sunday 25 October 2026.
The decision comes from Fabrice Rigoulet-Roze, the préfet of Haute-Garonne and of the Occitanie region. A préfet is the official who represents the national government in a département or region and is responsible for public order. France 3 Occitanie says he explained the measures as a guest on the news bulletin of Ici, the local public radio network.
The préfet linked the curfew directly to the violence and damage in Toulouse on 17 October. According to the broadcaster, the state’s plan before Saturday’s rally has three parts: the night-time curfew, concertation (talks) with the trade unions, and a stronger presence of the forces de l’ordre, meaning the police and gendarmerie. France 3 Occitanie reports that the state wants to prevent a new outbreak of violence.
What it means for you
If you live in, work in or visit central Toulouse, the curfew affects you between midnight and 5am until Sunday 25 October. This matters most for anyone who goes out late in the centre, works night shifts, or travels home through the hypercentre after midnight.
The France 3 Occitanie report we used does not give the exact boundaries of the curfew zone, any exemptions, or the penalties for breaking it. Before you go out late, check the official order from the préfecture, called an arrêté préfectoral (prefectoral order). The Haute-Garonne préfecture publishes these on its website and social media channels. The order should set out the streets covered and any exceptions, for example for work or medical reasons.
A rally is planned for Saturday 24 October, and the préfet has announced a larger police presence. Expect more officers in the centre that day. Plan extra time if you need to cross the city centre, and keep an eye on local news for any changes to the rally or to public transport.
If you do not usually go into the hypercentre at night, daily life should change little. The curfew applies only between midnight and 5am.
What to watch next
The main date is Saturday 24 October, when the rally takes place. How the day goes will show whether the préfet’s approach works. Watch for the outcome of the talks with the unions, which France 3 Occitanie names as one of the three parts of the state’s plan.
The curfew is due to end on Sunday 25 October. Check for any announcement from the préfecture about extending it or lifting it early, as it is the authority that decides.
