195 New Unicorns in Six Months Beat All of 2025

One hundred ninety-five companies crossed the billion-dollar valuation mark in the first six months of 2026. That is already more new unicorns than all of last year, when 193 were minted, and the fastest pace Crunchbase has recorded since the second half of 2022.

The numbers come from an update to the Crunchbase Unicorn Board published Monday by Gene Teare, and they sketch a venture market running very hot in very specific places. The first-half class added roughly $440 billion in combined value and has raised about $80 billion across the companies’ lifetimes. Robotics startups and the new wave of AI research labs led the cohort, followed by financial services, healthcare and biotech, AI infrastructure and devtools, defence, semiconductors and aerospace.

Where the new unicorns live

The United States minted 110 of the 195, a 56 percent share. The bigger surprise sits in second place. China produced 38 new unicorns in six months after managing just 10 in all of 2025, an acceleration that tracks with the country’s resurgence in AI model development. The United Kingdom came third with 13. Counted by continent, North America claims 115, Asia 50 and Europe 27, while Latin America, Oceania and Africa produced one each.

The most valuable newcomer is DeepSeek. The Chinese open-source model developer was valued at $50 billion in its first external financing, a debut that would have towered over almost any previous unicorn cohort. Crypto exchange OKX joined the board at $25 billion. OpenAI Deployment Co., a San Francisco firm majority owned by OpenAI, entered at $14 billion after raising $4 billion from private equity investors.

DeepSeek’s arrival was not a solo act either. Crunchbase’s June update noted that ten frontier AI labs rushed onto the Unicorn Board in a single month, led by the Hangzhou firm, a concentration of brand-new billion-dollar research outfits that has no precedent in earlier cycles. The board as a whole now tracks 1,839 still-private unicorn companies, alongside 643 that have already exited.

The six-month double

Speed is the defining feature of this class. Crunchbase counts 19 companies that raised fast follow-on rounds, often within six months, and at least doubled an earlier valuation to reach $2 billion or more. Chip startup Etched went from $5 billion to $10 billion in six months. Defence manufacturer Hadrian jumped from $1.6 billion to $7.9 billion in seven. Valar Atomics, which is building nuclear reactors to power AI data centres, tripled from $2 billion to $6 billion in four months.

Four of the newcomers were already valued as decacorns by early August, with another five above $5 billion. History suggests those numbers will climb. Of the 193 unicorns minted in 2025, twelve became decacorns and another eighteen topped $5 billion, and Crunchbase expects valuations for the 2026 cohort to rise significantly over the next year.

Scale cuts both ways here. For all the noise the newcomers generate, their $440 billion in combined value represents about 5 percent of the board’s total, and the $80 billion they have raised is likewise around 5 percent of all funding collected by still-private unicorn companies. The class of 2026 is enormous by historical standards and still a rounding error next to the giants above it.

An exit market that finally works

What separates this boom from the 2021 vintage is that liquidity has arrived alongside the paper gains. The first half of 2026 delivered the largest venture-backed exit of all time in SpaceX’s IPO, and Crunchbase data puts global startup investment at a record $510 billion for the half. July alone produced a record 14 billion-dollar rounds, so the second half has opened at full throttle.

The concentration is impossible to ignore, though. The new class accounts for just 5 percent of the Unicorn Board’s total value, meaning the overwhelming majority still sits with established giants, and the fastest raisers cluster tightly around AI, chips, defence and energy. Crunchbase itself describes a bifurcated funding environment with a wide range of valuations, which is a polite way of saying that founders outside the hot lanes are competing for a much smaller pool of attention.

The second half will test whether the pace holds. China’s re-emergence, an open IPO window and an apparently bottomless appetite for AI infrastructure all point the same way for now, and 232 companies have already joined the board for the full year.
