Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5, its newest AI model that the company says “comes close to the capabilities of Claude Fable 5 in many domains.” The release on Thursday marks a significant step for the company as it navigates an increasingly tense relationship with US regulators.

Opus 5 is being positioned as a workhorse model. Anthropic says it excels at complex coding tasks and is the ideal everyday model for enterprise customers, particularly in knowledge work and biology. The more powerful Fable 5 remains the go-to for the most ambitious AI agent projects and long-horizon tasks.

The launch comes just weeks after Anthropic’s latest confrontation with the US government over AI safety. Fable 5 — the public-facing version of the controversial Mythos-class model — was taken offline temporarily and then brought back with stronger cybersecurity safeguards. That incident kicked off a new era of AI regulation under the Trump administration.

Anthropic appears to have learned from that experience. The company says Opus 5 has stronger cybersecurity safeguards than its predecessor, Opus 4.8. Spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri told The Verge that Anthropic continues “to work with our government partners to conduct their own independent testing of our models. This includes Opus 5.”

The release also follows OpenAI’s recent GPT-5.6 launch, which itself underwent a roughly two-week government trial period before wider rollout. The pattern suggests that pre-release government testing is becoming standard practice for frontier AI models.

For Anthropic, Opus 5 represents a balancing act: pushing the frontier of AI capability while keeping regulators and enterprise customers confident that the technology is safe to deploy.
