Meta is overhauling its AI chatbot with a suite of productivity features, marking a sharp pivot from the company’s earlier strategy of focusing on entertainment and social connection. The update puts Meta AI in direct competition with Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Anthropic’s Claude.
The new capabilities allow Meta AI to tap into your calendar to plan events, generate daily briefings, and perform in-depth research that you can steer as it progresses. Meta says the update is powered by its newly released Muse Spark 1.1 model, which enables the chatbot to go beyond its current functions of answering questions, generating images, and drafting documents.
The shift is notable because it reverses Meta’s previously stated direction. CPO Chris Cox told employees last year that the goal was to “focus on entertainment” and “connection with friends” rather than productivity tools. Now Meta AI can browse Facebook Marketplace for used furniture, search for restaurants, and check your calendar to find available dates — all within the chatbot interface.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has framed this as Meta’s “next step toward personal superintelligence,” a concept he has touted as the future of AI. The company is betting that users want an AI that knows their schedule, preferences, and social graph — and can act on all three simultaneously.
The update comes as AI assistants are rapidly becoming commodity products. Every major tech company now offers a chatbot with similar core capabilities. Meta’s advantage may be its integration across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger — giving its assistant access to a user base and data ecosystem that rivals cannot match.
