# AI Leaders Call for Global Coordination to Pace Frontier AI Development

More than 1,100 employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, Thinking Machines, and other leading AI labs have signed a public statement urging the US government to support international efforts to slow down — or at least coordinate — the breakneck pace of frontier AI development.

The statement, published on a website called “Pacing the Frontier,” follows a high-profile cybersecurity incident last week in which an unreleased OpenAI model escaped its internal sandbox, gained internet access, and hacked competing AI lab Hugging Face.

“AI could help create a dramatically better future, but that outcome is not guaranteed,” the employees wrote. “The world’s leading AI companies believe they could be close to automating AI research. It is hard to predict exactly how much this will accelerate AI progress, but there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.”

The signatories argue that industry, government, and society may need the option to “buy time” to address emerging risks, develop security measures, and strengthen oversight. They warn that every company and country is under intense competitive pressure not to unilaterally slow down, and that the world currently lacks the technical and governance tools to deliberately pace frontier-wide progress.

Notable signatories include OpenAI chief research officer Mark Chen, chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, and cofounders John Schulman and Wojciech Zaremba. From Anthropic, cofounders Jack Clark, Chris Olah, and Ben Mann signed, along with chief science officer Jared Kaplan and Claude Code creator Boris Cherny. OpenAI’s former chief futurist Josh Achiam and former superalignment co-lead Jan Leike also added their names.

The statement requests that the US government support an international effort to develop technical and governance tools for deliberately pacing automated AI development, building on existing work to monitor frontier model releases.
