Google’s $205 Billion AI Spending Spree Makes Wall Street Nervous

Google just made investors very uncomfortable. In its quarterly earnings report, the company raised its capital expenditure forecast to as much as $205 billion — up from the previous quarter’s top-end estimate of $190 billion. Even the lower bound of the new range, $195 billion, exceeds what Google had previously said it might spend at the high end.

The problem is not just the scale of spending. Google is spending more money than it is making, while facing competitive pressure from Chinese AI tools and pricing pressure to keep its models affordable. “You don’t have to be a finance genius to figure out that spending more than you make isn’t an ideal business practice,” observers noted.

The anxiety isn’t limited to Google. Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft all report earnings this week, and there are widespread expectations that they too will announce increased spending on data center buildouts. The entire AI ecosystem is watching nervously as the bills come due.

Credit markets are already reflecting the unease. Insurance on Nvidia’s debt became more expensive after reports the company was in talks for deals worth more than $750 billion. One credit strategist warned of “financial alchemy driven by opaqueness” in the AI financing ecosystem.

Whether this is a temporary correction or the beginning of an AI spending reckoning remains to be seen. But for the first time since the AI boom began, Wall Street is asking the question no one wanted to hear: what if all this spending doesn’t pay off?
