Secondary school and university students in Lyon kept up their protest movement on Tuesday 3 November 2026, with 27 schools and higher education sites disrupted and 17 people arrested by midday, according to live coverage from Lyon Capitale. A student march through the 7th and 8th arrondissements passed off calmly, and organisers are now calling for a much larger turnout on 5 November.

What happened

The day followed several blocus (blockades, where students block school entrances) on Monday morning in schools across the Métropole de Lyon (the metropolitan authority covering Lyon and its surrounding towns). Monday was also the rentrée, the first day back after the school holidays. Lyon Capitale reports that six people were arrested that day, mainly for firing fireworks mortars or throwing projectiles.

By 8.30am on Tuesday, 23 sites were affected by gatherings, according to the outlet. That figure covered 20 schools and three higher education institutions: Lyon 1, Lyon 2 and the IEP (Institut d’études politiques, the Lyon branch of the Sciences Po network). The préfecture du Rhône (the State’s representative office in the département) said police were working with the Éducation nationale (the national education ministry and its local services) to help pupils and staff get into buildings.

At 8.44am, one person was arrested in Vénissieux. By 9.30am, Lyon Capitale reported 23 lycées (secondary schools for pupils aged roughly 15 to 18) affected by crowds, with some mortar fire and bins set alight. At universities, Lyon 1, Lyon 2, the ENS (École normale supérieure de Lyon) and Centrale (École Centrale de Lyon, an engineering school) were also affected. Six people had been arrested by that point in the morning.

At 10am, around 200 students gathered at place Jean Jaurès in the 7th arrondissement, where the State had deployed a large security presence. The march set off at 10.38am towards the Manufacture des Tabacs, a former tobacco factory in the 8th arrondissement that now houses part of the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3. Lyon Capitale estimated about a thousand people in the march, while the préfecture put the figure at 900 at 11am. The procession reached the Manufacture des Tabacs calmly and with music at around 11.40am.

The 12.20pm update put the total at 27 disrupted sites. Lycées Ampère, Fays and Picasso stayed closed and switched to distanciel (remote lessons online). Seventeen people had been arrested since the morning, including three outside Lycée Jacques Brel for mortar fire, starting a fire and damage to property.

What it means for you

If your child attends a lycée in Lyon or the wider Rhône, check whether their school is affected. Pupils at Lycée Ampère, Lycée Fays and Lycée Picasso are being taught remotely while those schools are closed, so families there should look out for messages from the school about online lessons. Most French schools post updates through their digital platform (often called the ENT, or espace numérique de travail) or by email.

Pupils at other schools may find crowds or blocked entrances at the start of the day. The préfecture says police are on site to help people get in. Lyon Capitale reported incidents involving mortars, bin fires and damage near some schools, so younger pupils in particular may need extra care on their way in.

Students and staff at Lyon 1, Lyon 2, the IEP, the ENS and Centrale should check their institution’s channels, as all five were listed as affected on Tuesday.

If you live, work or travel around place Jean Jaurès in the 7th or the Manufacture des Tabacs in the 8th, expect a visible police presence and possible disruption when marches take place, although Tuesday’s procession was peaceful.

What to watch next

According to Lyon Capitale, students and lycée pupils want tens of thousands of people on the streets on Thursday 5 November. Parents should watch for school announcements about closures or remote teaching around that date. Residents near the usual march routes should check for updates on the route and timing. Lyon Capitale has also published a separate guide to the protests and school blockades expected in Lyon and the Métropole this week.
