FC Barcelona lost 2-1 to Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou, ending a La Liga run of nine wins from their first nine games. Kylian Mbappé scored both Madrid goals, the second coming three minutes from the end of normal time, which stopped Hansi Flick’s side from setting a record of ten consecutive wins.
A fortunate opener for Madrid
The Clásico drew 62,055 fans, who built a mosaic carrying the message Batec Blaugrana (Blaugrana Heartbeat). Madrid played without Courtois, who was unwell, so Andriy Lunin started in goal. Barcelona already had Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde out at right-back, and their problems grew after half an hour when Xavi Espart went off injured. Alejandro Balde came on and João Cancelo moved to the other flank.
Madrid scored in the 43rd minute after a move involving Bernardo Silva, Cucurella and Diomande. Gerard Martín tried to clear the ball, but it bounced off Mbappé and into the net. Lamine Yamal had a good chance to equalise straight away but did not connect cleanly. Diomande then hit the side netting at the other end, and Madrid went in 1-0 up at half-time.
Raphinha levels, Mbappé decides
Barcelona controlled possession after the break, and the pressure paid off just after the hour. A quickly taken corner caught Madrid unprepared, Pedri found Raphinha, and the Brazilian struck a low shot past Lunin. Barcelona then had their best spell of the match. Lunin made a fine save from a Gerard Martín header, Frenkie de Jong had chances on his return from injury, and Huijsen blocked a powerful shot from Lamine Yamal.
Madrid stayed dangerous on the counterattack, and that decided the game. With three minutes of normal time left, Bellingham started a break. Arda Güler moved the ball on to Camavinga, who went past Cubarsí and passed across for Mbappé to score into an empty net.
Still top of La Liga
A win would have put Barcelona nine points clear of Real Madrid. They now lead them by three points and are two points ahead of Atlético Madrid. It is their first league defeat of the season. Their next match is at home to Alavés at Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday.
