Microsoft is finally combining its two Copilot apps into one. The consumer Copilot app and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app will merge into a single interface. Personal and work accounts will both live inside the new unified app.
The app keeps the “Microsoft Copilot” name but gets an updated icon. The change also clears up a small but long-running annoyance. Users will no longer see two Copilot icons in the system tray or taskbar.
“Starting with a fresh look, the updated app combines the best of Copilot chat and image creation, with the power of Microsoft 365 for your work,” Microsoft said in its update announcement.
The merger is more than a visual cleanup. Microsoft calls it a technical milestone on the way to a larger “super app” planned for later this year. The company wants the groundwork in place before the bigger shift arrives.
The rollout runs in stages. Mobile and web apps begin updating in mid-August. Windows and Mac desktop apps follow in mid-September. Some Windows Insiders will see the new app this week.
What you notice depends on which Copilot app you already use. Existing Copilot users keep their chats and content as they move over. Microsoft 365 Copilot users get the new icon, small navigation changes, and access to Copilot chat.
The move points to a broader Microsoft strategy. The company has spent the past year pushing Copilot into Windows, Office, and its enterprise tools. A single front door makes that push easier to follow. It also matches how rivals like OpenAI and Google now bundle their AI features into fewer apps.
Microsoft has already moved aggressively to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in enterprise AI. The Copilot merger fits that same pattern: fewer products, one clear brand, and a simpler path for customers.
Microsoft has not shared a firm date for the full super app. For now, the unified Copilot app is the first step. Mobile and web users should watch for the update this month. Desktop users will see it next month.
