Munich Airport’s winter flight schedule (Winterflugplan) has now started and runs until the end of March 2027. It brings two new airlines and more flights to Asia, Africa, the Americas and Arctic Scandinavia, the Munich daily tz reports.
What happened
According to tz, which based its report on a press release (Pressemitteilung) from Flughafen München (Munich Airport), the winter schedule covers 182 destinations in 67 countries. The airport describes a range that runs from Northern Lights trips in Scandinavia to long-haul routes, sunshine destinations and major cities.
Two airlines are new to Munich this winter. Fly2Galicia links Munich with Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain twice a week. tz notes that the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is closely tied to the Jakobsweg, the Way of St James pilgrimage route. Cyprus Airways will fly to Larnaca in Cyprus twice a week from 17 December.
Several long-haul routes are getting more flights. Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways will each fly from Munich to Singapore and Bangkok ten times a week instead of seven. Lufthansa will serve Mexico City, Johannesburg and São Paulo five times a week instead of three.
Bangkok gets the largest increase. For a limited period starting on 16 January, Lufthansa will add a second daily flight to the Thai capital. tz reports that, together with Thai Airways, this means up to four flights a day to Bangkok on some days of the week.
The premium airline beOnd is also expanding and will fly to the Maldives four times a week, stopping in either Dubai or at Red Sea Airport in Saudi Arabia. The airport calls the first flight of Lufthansa’s new Airbus A350-1000, named “Deutschland”, a highlight of the season.
Destinations in the far north are increasingly popular, according to the airport. Lufthansa is doubling its flights to Tromsø in Norway from two to four a week. Later this winter, its flights to Kittilä in Finnish Lapland will go from two to three a week. From 4 December, Lufthansa will add two weekly flights to Rovaniemi, a route Norwegian already serves. Discover Airlines will fly to Ivalo once a week from early January.
Some routes launched this summer will continue through the winter. Air Serbia keeps its daily flight to Belgrade, Bluebird still flies to Tel Aviv three times a week, and Royal Jordanian continues its three weekly flights to Amman.
What it means for you
If you live in Munich and travel home or abroad over the winter, you may have more choice of flights and departure days than last season. The changes matter most to people with links to these places:
- South-East Asia: more frequent flights to Singapore and Bangkok, with the most Bangkok flights on offer from 16 January.
- Latin America and southern Africa: five weekly Lufthansa flights to Mexico City, São Paulo and Johannesburg.
- Cyprus and Spain: new direct options to Larnaca from 17 December and to Santiago de Compostela.
- Serbia, Israel and Jordan: the routes to Belgrade, Tel Aviv and Amman keep running through the winter.
- Arctic trips: more flights to Tromsø, Kittilä and Rovaniemi, and a new weekly option to Ivalo.
Before booking, check the exact flight days and dates with the airline. Some of the extra capacity is seasonal or starts partway through the winter, so the schedule you see in December may differ from the one in February. tz does not give fares for any of the new or expanded routes.
What to watch next
Several changes start later in the season. Cyprus Airways and Lufthansa’s extra Rovaniemi flights begin in December. Discover Airlines starts flying to Ivalo in early January, and Lufthansa’s second daily Bangkok flight begins on 16 January for a limited period. Lufthansa’s third weekly Kittilä flight follows later in the winter. The source does not give a date for the first flight of the A350-1000 “Deutschland”. The winter schedule ends at the end of March 2027, when the summer schedule is expected to take over.
