AI Hiring Boom in the Netherlands Creates Talent Crunch for Local Startups

The Netherlands is experiencing an unprecedented surge in AI-related hiring, with job postings for machine learning engineers, data scientists, and AI product managers increasing 47% year-over-year in Q2 2026, according to data from Techleap.nl and Indeed. The surge is creating a fierce talent war that threatens to squeeze the country’s vibrant startup ecosystem.

Amsterdam alone now hosts over 180 AI-focused companies employing more than 12,000 people. Major international employers — including Uber (which operates its international headquarters in Amsterdam), Booking.com, Adyen, and Databricks — are offering compensation packages that Dutch startups struggle to match. A senior ML engineer in Amsterdam can now command €120,000–€160,000 plus equity, up roughly 25% from 2024 levels.

“We’re seeing candidates with two years of experience getting offers that would have required five years just eighteen months ago,” said Marloes Pomp, founder of The Hague-based AI recruitment platform AI Talents. “The mismatch between supply and demand is the worst I’ve seen in fifteen years in Dutch tech.”

The Dutch government has responded by accelerating several talent initiatives. The Kennismigrant (highly-skilled migrant) visa programme has been streamlined, reducing processing times to under four weeks for AI specialists. TU Delft, University of Amsterdam, and Eindhoven University of Technology have collectively expanded their AI master’s programmes by 40% for the 2026–2027 academic year.

However, the startup sector faces particular challenges. “A corporate can pay a junior ML engineer €90,000 and absorb the cost,” said Constantijn van Oranje, special envoy at Techleap.nl. “A seed-stage startup cannot. We need alternative models — equity-heavy compensation, remote-first hiring beyond the Randstad, and faster paths to permanent residency for international talent.”

Some Dutch startups are adapting by hiring remotely across the EU, particularly from Spain, Portugal, and Eastern Europe, where salary expectations are lower and remote work infrastructure has matured significantly since the pandemic.

The crunch comes as the EU AI Act increases demand for AI governance and compliance specialists — a new role category that barely existed two years ago but now accounts for 8% of all AI-related job postings in the Netherlands.
