Monday starts with patchy fog that should clear to a sunny, mild afternoon. Today’s news covers student debt, a new traffic light near The Hague, a closed court hearing in Amsterdam and incidents on roads and streets in the Rotterdam and Utrecht areas.
Student debt falls for the first time
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) says the total debt owed by current and former students in the Netherlands fell in 2026, the first decrease of its kind. The figures are provisional. If you are studying here or repaying a DUO loan, this shows how the national picture is changing, but it does not change what you owe yourself.

New traffic light on the A4 exit to The Hague puzzles drivers
Drivers heading for The Hague now face a red light at A4 exit 12 towards Den Haag Zuid and the Westland, because the free right turn onto the N211 was removed on Monday morning. Many find this odd, since the N211 is being rebuilt to improve traffic flow. Some fear the queues will simply move back onto the A4, so allow extra time if you use this route.
