Trade unions have called a new national day of strikes and demonstrations for Thursday 5 November, with gatherings planned in Nice and Cannes. According to France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, residents of the Alpes-Maritimes should expect fresh school blockades, some closed schools and disrupted train services.
What happened
France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the regional public broadcaster, reported on 4 November that a nationwide journée de mobilisation will take place on Thursday 5 November. The term covers a coordinated day of strikes (grève) and street protests (manifestations). The call comes from the syndicats, France’s trade unions.
The broadcaster says this is the fourth such day since 17 October. In the Alpes-Maritimes, the département (administrative county) that includes Nice, Cannes and the surrounding coast and hinterland, two rassemblements (public gatherings) are planned: one in Nice and one in Cannes.
France 3 lists three main disruptions for the day: new blocus lycéens, closed schools, and disrupted train services. A blocus is a blockade, in which pupils gather at the entrance of their lycée (upper secondary school) and stop or slow down entry to the building.
France 3 quotes the unions’ call, which sets out their demands. Translated, it reads: “Wages and pensions, public services, employment, tax, social and environmental justice: other choices are possible.” According to the broadcaster, the unions present the day as a response to policies they call unequal and austerity-driven, which they say make life impossible for a growing number of people.
What it means for you
If you live in or around Nice, the strike may affect your day in three ways, based on what France 3 reports.
- Schools. France 3 reports that some schools will be closed. If you have children at a local school, check messages from the school or the teacher before setting off. Many French schools use a digital platform known as an ENT (espace numérique de travail, an online school portal) or send notes home to tell parents about strike-day arrangements.
- Lycées. France 3 expects new blockades at lycées. If your teenager attends a lycée, check whether classes are going ahead and how the school plans to handle access to the building.
- Trains. France 3 says train traffic will be disrupted. If you commute by rail along the coast or inland, check your operator’s app or website for the latest timetable before you travel, and leave extra time.
The gatherings in Nice and Cannes may also cause local congestion or changes to traffic in the city centres. If you plan to drive or take public transport near the routes, check local announcements on the day for meeting points and times.
If you work in France, the right to strike is protected, and your employer or union will confirm whether your workplace is involved. If you rely on public services that day, it is wise to confirm opening hours before you go.
What to watch next
France 3 notes this is the fourth day of mobilisation since 17 October, which shows the movement has continued for several weeks. Watch for union announcements about further dates, which usually come shortly after each day of action. Parents should also keep an eye on school communications, as the lycée blockades have formed a repeated part of these days. Rail users should check for further strike notices that could affect services in the coming weeks.
