The AI Hedge Fund That Kept Its Anthropic Shares

A hedge fund built on the conviction that AI would reshape markets just got outrun by the markets it was betting on. Situational Awareness, the investment firm launched by a former OpenAI researcher, has reportedly unwound its public equity portfolio after leveraged bets on publicly traded stocks fell hard. The fund that promised to see the future clearly ended up on the wrong side of it, at least in public markets.

What makes the story more interesting than a typical blowup is what the fund did not have to sell. Situational Awareness still holds shares in Anthropic, the private AI lab behind the Claude models. That single position may say more about the firm’s original thesis than any of the public trades that forced its hand.

When conviction meets leverage

Leverage is a wonderful thing when a position moves your way and a brutal one when it doesn’t. Situational Awareness reportedly used it on public equities, amplifying its exposure to the companies it believed would ride the AI wave. When those bets dropped, the losses compounded faster than a straight cash position would have, and the fund was forced to sell rather than wait for a rebound. That is the mechanical reality of borrowed money. You do not get to hold through the drawdown when the margin call arrives.

There is a certain irony here. A fund named for the idea of seeing the landscape more clearly than everyone else got caught by the oldest trap in the book, which is being right about the long arc and wrong about the timing. Believing AI will transform the economy is one thing. Sizing a leveraged public book so that a sharp pullback wipes out your ability to stay in the trade is another. The thesis can be sound while the position sinks.

The one card still in hand

Public stocks trade every second, which is exactly why they can turn against a leveraged fund so quickly. Private shares work differently. The Anthropic stake Situational Awareness holds does not reprice minute to minute, does not trigger margin calls, and cannot be dumped by a broker to cover losses somewhere else. It sits on the books, illiquid and quiet, waiting for a liquidity event that the fund does not control but very much wants.

That is why the Anthropic position matters more than its size alone would suggest. It represents the part of the AI trade that the fund could not be forced out of. For a firm founded by someone who came out of OpenAI, a direct equity stake in one of the leading model labs is close to a purest expression of the original view. If you truly believe the frontier AI companies are the ones that capture the value, you want to own them directly, not just their suppliers and customers on the public exchanges.

The catch is that a private stake is only worth what someone eventually pays for it. Anthropic has raised at rising valuations and remains one of the most closely watched private companies in technology, but a paper mark is not cash in the bank. Until there is a sale, a tender offer, or an eventual public listing, the position is potential rather than proceeds. Situational Awareness has a card to play. It cannot choose when the table turns it over.

A cautionary tale wearing a growth story

Strip away the AI framing and this is a familiar Wall Street lesson about the difference between being early and being wrong, and about how leverage collapses that difference into a single margin call. Plenty of investors have held the correct long-term view and still lost the ability to see it through because they borrowed too aggressively against a volatile book. Conviction does not pay interest. Positions do.

Situational Awareness now becomes a test case for a strategy that has grown popular across the industry, which is pairing liquid public AI trades with illiquid stakes in the private labs. The public side gives you flexibility and the ability to express a view quickly. The private side gives you exposure you cannot easily exit, for better and for worse. This fund just learned how those two halves behave under stress, and the private half is the one still standing.

Watch what happens to that Anthropic stake, because it will reveal whether the fund’s core bet was ever really about public markets or about owning a piece of the labs directly. If Situational Awareness rebuilds around private AI exposure, the public-portfolio unwind will read as a painful pruning rather than an ending. The next move belongs partly to Anthropic, and partly to whoever decides what that private paper is finally worth.
